Living to Please God - Part 1

Becoming a Christian is step one. What comes after? How do we live a life pleasing to God? A life that brings honor to His name and to the work He has done in our lives. That's the focus of this message.

Once a person acknowledges his or her sin and trusts in Christ as Savior, the need is to know how to live to honor Him in daily living. Many such instructions are given in Ephesians 4:28-32-

Verses 28-29 say: “Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need.

Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.

How are you doing in this regard? Are you guilty of taking what is not yours? At work, do you give an hour's work for an hour's pay? How about your language? Can others tell by your speech that you love the Lord Jesus Christ?

Determine as a Christ-follower that you will use your speech to encourage rather than to discourage others. Verses 30-32 add:

And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.

Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

Use these verses as a checklist to evaluate how you've been doing lately. Ask God to help you live a life that honors the Lord Jesus Christ.

Perhaps you need to dwell on one or two items at a time. Thinking back on your life and considering what others have been seeing in you, ask God to enable you to better reflect the characteristics of Christ in your life.
