I Am the Good Shepherd - {Interlinear <Greek>}

10:2 - But {δὲ<de>} he who {ὁ<ho>} enters {εἰσερχόμενος<eiserchomai>} by {διὰ <dia>} the {τῆς<ho>} door {θύρας<thyra>} is {ἐστιν<eimi>} theshepherd {ποιμήν<poimēn>} ofthe {τῶν<ho>} sheep. {προβάτων.<probaton>}

10:8 - All {πάντες<pas>} who <ὅσοι<hosos>} came {ἦλθον<erchomai>} before {πρὸ <pro>} me {ἐμοῦ,<egō>} are {εἰσὶν<eimi>} thieves {κλέπται<kleptēs>} and {καὶ<kai>} robbers, {λησταί·<lēstēs>} but {ἀλλ᾽<alla>} the {τὰ<ho>} sheep {πρόβατα.<probaton>} didnot {οὐκ<ou>} listen {ἤκουσαν<akouō>} tothem. {αὐτῶν<autos>}


10:9 - I <ἐγώ<egō>} am {εἰμι<eimi>} the {ἡ<ho>} door. {θύρα·<thyra>} If {ἐάν<ean>} anyone {τις<tis>} enters {εἰσέλθῃ,<eiserchomai>} by {δι᾽<dia>} me, {ἐμοῦ<egō>} hewillbesaved {σωθήσεται<sōzō>} and {καὶ<kai>} will go in {εἰσελεύσεται <eiserchomai>} and {καὶ<kai>} out {ἐξελεύσεται<exerchomai>} and {καὶ<kai>} find {εὑρήσει.<heuriskō>} pasture. {νομὴν<nomē>}


10:10 - The {ὁ<ho>} thief {κλέπτης<kleptēs>} comes {ἔρχεται<erchomai>} only {οὐκ εἰ μὴ<ou ei mē>} to {ἵνα<hina>} steal {κλέψῃ<kleptō>} and {καὶ<kai>} kill {θύσῃ<thyō>} and {καὶ<kai>} destroy. {ἀπολέσῃ·<apollymi>} I {ἐγὼ<egō>} came {ἦλθον<erchomai>} that {ἵνα<hina>} theymayhave {ἔχωσιν<echō>>} life {ζωὴν<zōē>} and {καὶ <kai>} have {ἔχωσιν.<echō>} itabundantly. {περισσὸν<perissos>}

10:12 - He who {ὁ<ho>} • {δὲ<de>} is {ὢν<eimi>} ahired {μισθωτὸς <misthōtos>} handand {καὶ<kai>} not {οὐκ<ou>} ashepherd, {ποιμήν,<poimēn>} who {οὗ <hos>} doesnot {οὐκ<ou>} own {ἔστιν ἴδια,<eimi idios>} the {τὰ<ho>} sheep, {πρόβατα<probaton>} sees {θεωρεῖ<theōreō>} the {τὸν<ho>} wolf {λύκον<lykos>} coming {ἐρχόμενον<erchomai>} and {καὶ<kai>} leaves {ἀφίησιν<aphiēmi>} the {τὰ <ho>} sheep {πρόβατα<probaton>} and {καὶ<kai>} flees, {φεύγει,<pheugō>} and {καὶ<kai>} the {ὁ<ho>} wolf {λύκος<lykos>} snatches {ἁρπάζει<harpazō>} them {αὐτὰ<autos>} and {καὶ <kai>} scatters {σκορπίζει.<skorpizō>}

10:17 - For this reason {διὰ τοῦτό<dia houtos>} the {ὁ<ho>} Father {πατὴρ <patēr>} loves {ἀγαπᾷ<agapaō>} me, {με<egō>} because {ὅτι<hoti>} I {ἐγὼ<egō>} lay {τίθημι <tithēmi>} downmy {μου,<egō>} life {τὴν ψυχήν<ho psychē>} that {ἵνα <hina>} Imaytake {λάβω<lambanō>} it {αὐτήν.<autos>} upagain. {πάλιν<palin>}


10:18 - No one {οὐδεὶς<oudeis>} takes {αἴρει<airō>} it {αὐτὴν<autos>} from {ἀπ᾽ <apo>} me, {ἐμοῦ,<egō>} but {ἀλλ᾽<alla>} I {ἐγὼ<egō>} lay {τίθημι<tithēmi>} it {αὐτὴν <autos>} downofmy {ἐμαυτοῦ.<emautou>} ownaccord. {ἀπ᾽<apo>} Ihave {ἔχω<echō>} authority {ἐξουσίαν<exousia>} tolay {θεῖναι<tithēmi>} it {αὐτὴν <autos>} down,and {καὶ<kai>} Ihave {ἔχω<echō>} authority {ἐξουσίαν <exousia>} totake {λαβεῖν<lambanō>} it {αὐτήν·<autos>} upagain. {πάλιν <palin>} This {ταύτην<houtos>} charge {τὴν ἐντολὴν<ho entolē>} Ihavereceived {ἔλαβον<lambanō>} from {παρὰ<para>} my {μου.<egō>} Father.” {τοῦ πατρός<ho patēr>}


10:19 - Therewas {ἐγένετο<ginomai>} again {πάλιν<palin>} adivision {Σχίσμα <schisma>} among {ἐν<en>} the {τοῖς<ho>} Jews {Ἰουδαίοις<Ioudaios>} because of {διὰ<dia>} these {τούτους.<houtos>} words. {τοὺς λόγους<ho logos>}


10:20 - • {δὲ<de>} Many {πολλοὶ<polys>} of {ἐξ<ek>} them {αὐτῶν·<autos>} said, {ἔλεγον<legō>} “Hehas {ἔχει<echō>} ademon, {δαιμόνιον<daimonion>} and {καὶ<kai>} isinsane; {μαίνεται·<mainomai>} why {τί<tis>} listen {ἀκούετε;<akouō>} tohim?” {αὐτοῦ<autos>}


10:21 - Others {ἄλλοι<allos>} said, {ἔλεγον·<legō>} “These {ταῦτα<houtos>} are {ἔστιν<eimi>} not {οὐκ<ou>} the {τὰ<ho>} words {ῥήματα<rhēma>} ofonewhoisoppressedbyademon. {δαιμονιζομένου·<daimonizomai>} Can {δύναται<dynamai>} ademon {δαιμόνιον<daimonion>} open {ἀνοῖξαι; <anoigō>} theeyes {ὀφθαλμοὺς<ophthalmos>} oftheblind {τυφλῶν <typhlos?” {μὴ<mē>}






 

The imagery of sheep, shepherd, and sheepfold was a central part of Israel’s heritage—both as a Bedouin people and, more significantly, as the people of God (Psalm 23). By choosing this symbol, Jesus accomplished two things. He drew a strong contrast between himself and the shepherds of Israel. He also declared himself to be the messianic Shepherd for whom Israel hoped (Zech. 13:7–9).


The sheepfold was commonly attached to the shepherd’s home. Thus, to enter the sheepfold was to come home. As the “door of the sheep,” Jesus is the only means of coming home to God—of becoming a member of the household of faith. Jesus is the merciful Shepherd who provides shelter, security, and pasture for his beloved sheep. The shepherds who preceded him in Israel’s history were mercenaries—fleeing the sheep quickly when under threat; and fleecing the sheep regularly for personal gain.


Jesus is the Good Shepherd, whose “goodness” cannot be overstated. Like David, the shepherd-king, Jesus risks his life to care for his sheep (cf. 1 Sam. 17:34–37). He knows his flock by name, and each of his sheep recognize and love his voice. Though the gospel is not a private story, it is most definitely a personal one. Jesus delights in his whole flock, and in each one of his sheep. Jesus’ flock and sheepfold is enormous, exceeding the borders of Israel. He has come for lost sheep from every tribe, language, people, and nation (Rev. 5:9).

But as the promised King, the greater David, Jesus literally laid down his life for the sheep on the cross. What a glorious paradox: The Good Shepherd became the Lamb of God to take away the sin of the world. Even throughout eternity, Jesus will be known as the Lamb who shepherds his people and guides them to “springs of living water” (Rev. 7:17).
