The Book of John - Chapter 11:1-16 - (ESV)

The Death of Lazarus - {Interlinear <Greek>}

11:1 - Now {δέ<de>} a certain man {τις<tis>} was {Ἦν<eimi>} ill, {ἀσθενῶν,<astheneō>} Lazarus {Λάζαρος<Lazaros>} of {ἀπὸ<apo>} Bethany, {Βηθανίας <Bēthania>} • {ἐκ<ek>} the {τῆς<ho>} village {κώμης<kōmē>} ofMary {Μαρίας <Maria>} and {καὶ<kai>} her {αὐτῆς·<autos>} sister {τῆς ἀδελφῆς<ho adelphē>} Martha. {Μάρθας<Martha>}

11:2 - Itwas {ἦν<eimi>} • {δὲ<de>} Mary {Μαρία<Maria>} who {ἡ<ho>} anointed {ἀλείψασα<aleiphō>} the {τὸν<ho>} Lord {κύριον<kyrios>} withointment {μύρῳ <myron>} and {καὶ<kai>} wiped {ἐκμάξασα<ekmassō>} his {αὐτοῦ <autos>} feet {τοὺς πόδας<ho pous>} withher {αὐτῆς,<autos>} hair, {ταῖς θριξὶν <hothrix>} whose {ἧς <hos>} brother {ὁ ἀδελφὸς<ho adelphos>} Lazarus {Λάζαρος <Lazaros>} wasill. {ἠσθένει.<astheneō>}

11:3 - So {οὖν<oun>} the {αἱ<ho>} sisters {ἀδελφαὶ<adelphē>} sent {ἀπέστειλαν <apostellō>} to {πρὸς<pros>} him, {αὐτὸν<autos>} saying, {λέγουσαι·<legō>} “Lord, {κύριε,<kyrios>} • {ἴδε<ide>} hewhom {ὃν<hos>} youlove {φιλεῖς<phileō>} isill.” {ἀσθενεῖ.<astheneō>}

11:4 - But {δὲ<de>} whenJesus {ὁ Ἰησοῦς<ho Iēsous>} heard {Ἀκούσας<akouō>} ithesaid, {εἶπεν·<legō>} “This {αὕτη<houtos>} illness {ἡ ἀσθένεια <ho astheneia>} doesnot {οὐκ<ou>} lead {ἔστιν<eimi>} to {πρὸς <pros>} death. {θάνατον<thanatos>} • {ἀλλ᾽<alla>} Itisfor {ὑπὲρ<hyper>} the {τῆς<ho>} glory {δόξης<doxa>} of God, {τοῦ θεοῦ<ho theos>} so that {ἵνα<hina>} the {ὁ<ho>} Son {υἱὸς<huios>} ofGod {τοῦ θεοῦ<ho theos>} maybeglorified {δοξασθῇ <doxazō>} through {δι᾽<dia>} it.” {αὐτῆς.<autos>}

11:5 - Now {δὲ<de>} Jesus {ὁ Ἰησοῦς<ho Iēsous>} loved {Ἠγάπα<agapaō>} Martha {τὴν Μάρθαν<ho Martha>} and {καὶ<kai>} her {αὐτῆς<autos>} sister {τὴν ἀδελφὴν<ho adelphē>} and {καὶ<kai>} Lazarus. {τὸν Λάζαρον.<ho Lazaros>}

11:6 - So, {οὖν<oun>} when {ὡς<hōs>} heheard {ἤκουσεν<akouō>} that {ὅτι <hoti>} Lazaruswasill, {ἀσθενεῖ,<astheneō>} • {τότε<tote>} • {μὲν<men>} hestayed {ἔμεινεν<menō>} two {δύο<dyo>} days {ἡμέρας.<hēmera>} longerin {ἐν<en>} theplace {τόπῳ<topos>} where {ᾧ<hos>} hewas. {ἦν<eimi>}

11:7 - Then {ἔπειτα<epeita>} after {μετὰ<meta>} this {τοῦτο<houtos>} hesaid {λέγει<legō>} tothe {τοῖς<ho>} disciples, {μαθηταῖς·<mathētēs>} “Letusgo {ἄγωμεν<agō>} to {εἰς<eis>} Judea {τὴν Ἰουδαίαν<ho Ioudaia>} again.” {πάλιν.<palin>}

11:8 - The {οἱ<ho>} disciples {μαθηταί·<mathētēs>} said {λέγουσιν<legō>} tohim, {αὐτῷ<autos>} “Rabbi, {ῥαββεί,<rhabbei>} the {οἱ<ho>} Jews {Ἰουδαῖοι,<Ioudaios>} werejustnow {νῦν<nyn>} seeking {ἐζήτουν<zēteō>} tostone {λιθάσαι <lithazō>} you, {σε<sy>} and {καὶ<kai>} areyougoing {ὑπάγεις <hypagō>} there {ἐκεῖ;<ekei>} again?” {πάλιν<palin>}

11:9 - Jesus {Ἰησοῦς·<Iēsous>} answered, {Ἀπεκρίθη<apokrinomai>} “Are {εἰσιν <eimi>} therenot {οὐχὶ<ouchi>} twelve {δώδεκα<dōdeka>} hours {ὧραί<hōra>} inthe {τῆς<ho>} day? {ἡμέρας;<hēmera>} If {ἐάν<ean>} anyone {τις<tis>} walks {περιπατῇ<peripateō>} in {ἐν<en>} the {τῇ<ho>} day, {ἡμέρᾳ,<hēmera>} hedoesnot {οὐ<ou>} stumble, {προσκόπτει,<proskoptō>} because {ὅτι<hoti>} hesees {βλέπει.<blepō>} the {τὸ<ho>} light {φῶς<phōs>} ofthis {τούτου<houtos>} world. {τοῦ κόσμου<ho kosmos>}

11:10 - But {δέ<de>} if {ἐὰν<ean>} anyone {τις <tis>} walks {περιπατῇ<peripateō>} in {ἐν<en>} the {τῇ<ho>} night, {νυκτί,<nyx>} hestumbles, {προσκόπτει,<proskoptō>} because {ὅτι<hoti>} the {τὸ<ho>} light {φῶς<phōs>} is {ἔστιν<eimi>} not {οὐκ<ou>} in {ἐν<en>} him.” {αὐτῷ.<autos>}

11:11 - • {καὶ<kai>} After {μετὰ τοῦτο<meta houtos>} saying {εἶπεν<legō>} these {ταῦτα<houtos>} things, ← hesaid {λέγει<legō>} tothem, {αὐτοῖς·<autos>} “Our {ἡμῶν<egō>} friend {ὁ φίλος<ho philos>} Lazarus {Λάζαρος<Lazaros>} hasfallenasleep {κεκοίμηται·<koimaomai>} but {ἀλλὰ<alla>} Igo {πορεύομαι <poreuomai>} to {ἵνα<hina>} awaken {ἐξυπνίσω<exypnizō>} him.” {αὐτόν.<autos>}

11:12 - • {οὖν<oun>} The {οἱ<ho>} disciples {μαθηταὶ<mathētēs>} said {Εἶπον <legō>} tohim, {αὐτῷ·<autos>} “Lord, {κύριε,<kyrios>} if {εἰ<ei>} hehasfallenasleep, {κεκοίμηται,<koimaomai>} hewillrecover.” {σωθήσεται.<sōzō>}

11:13 - Now {δὲ<de>} Jesus {ὁ Ἰησοῦς<ho Iēsous>} hadspoken {εἰρήκει<legō>} of {περὶ<peri>} his {αὐτοῦ·<autos>} death, {τοῦ θανάτου<ho thanatos>} but {δὲ<de>} they {ἐκεῖνοι<ekeinos>} thought {ἔδοξαν<dokeō>} that {ὅτι<hoti>} • {περὶ<peri>} hemeant {λέγει.<legō>} takingrest {τῆς κοιμήσεως<ho koimēsis>} insleep. {τοῦ ὕπνου<ho hypnos>}

11:14 - Then {Τότε<tote>} • {οὖν<oun>} Jesus {ὁ Ἰησοῦς<ho Iēsous>} told {εἶπεν <legō>} them {αὐτοῖς<autos>} plainly, {παρρησίᾳ·<parrēsia>} “Lazarus {Λάζαρος <Lazaros>} hasdied, {ἀπέθανεν.<apothnēskō>}

11:15 - and {καὶ<kai>} foryour {ὑμᾶς,<sy>} sake {δι᾽<dia>} Iamglad {χαίρω <chairō>} that {ὅτι<hoti>} Iwas {ἤμην<eimi>} not {οὐκ<ou>} there, {ἐκεῖ· <ekei>} so that {ἵνα<hina>} youmaybelieve. {πιστεύσητε,<pisteuō>} But {ἀλλὰ<alla>} letusgo {ἄγωμεν<agō>} to {πρὸς<pros>} him.” {αὐτόν.<autos>}

11:16 - So {οὖν<oun>} Thomas, {Θωμᾶς<Thōmas>} called {ὁ λεγόμενος<ho legō>} theTwin, {Δίδυμος<didymos>} said {Εἶπεν<legō>} tohisfellow disciples, {τοῖς συνμαθηταῖς·<ho synmathētēs>} “Letus {ἡμεῖς<egō>} also {καὶ<kai>} go, {ἄγωμεν<agō>} that {ἵνα<hina>} wemaydie {ἀποθάνωμεν<apothnēskō>} with {μετ᾽<meta>} him.” {αὐτοῦ.<autos>}

Jesus enjoyed a special relationship with Lazarus and his two sisters, Mary and Martha. This family gave him welcome and oasis in a world of conflict and escalating hostility (cf. Luke 10:38–42). Perhaps it was precisely because of Jesus’ great love for this family that he entrusted to them a very difficult story, a hard providence: the sickness and death of Lazarus.

The gospel is a story of our God doing all things well, not all things easily. His name is Abba Father, but this does not mean that he leads his children in a life of complacent ease and comfort. Indeed, upon hearing about Lazarus’s sickness, Jesus waited two days longer before responding—apparently so that his compassion could be revealed by a more glorious expression of divine power, expressed according to divine wisdom and timing. God’s ways are not our ways (Isa. 55:8). They are much better.
