The Plot to Kill Jesus - {Interlinear <Greek>}

11:45 - Many {Πολλοὶ<polys>} of {ἐκ<ek>} the {τῶν<ho>} Jews {Ἰουδαίων <Ioudaios>} therefore, {οὖν<oun>} who {οἱ<ho>} hadcome {ἐλθόντες <erchomai>} with {πρὸς<pros>} Mary {τὴν Μαριὰμ<ho Mariam>} and {καὶ<kai>} hadseen {θεασάμενοι<theaomai>} what {ἃ<hos>} hedid, {ἐποίησεν,<poieō>} believed {ἐπίστευσαν<pisteuō>} in {εἰς<eis>} him, {αὐτόν.<autos>}

11:46 - but {δὲ<de>} some {τινὲς<tis>} of {ἐξ<ek>} them {αὐτῶν<autos>} went {ἀπῆλθον <aperchomai>} to {πρὸς<pros>} the {τοὺς<ho>} Pharisees {Φαρισαίους <Pharisaios>} and {καὶ<kai>} told {εἶπον<legō>} them {αὐτοῖς<autos>} what {ἃ<hos>} Jesus {ὁ Ἰησοῦς.<ho Iēsous>} haddone. {ἐποίησεν<poieō>}

11:47 - So {οὖν<oun>} the {οἱ<ho>} chief priests {ἀρχιερεῖς<archiereus>} and {καὶ <kai>} the {οἱ<ho>} Pharisees {Φαρισαῖοι<Pharisaios>} gathered {Συνήγαγον <synagō>} thecouncil {συνέδριον<synedrion>} and {καὶ<kai>} said, {ἔλεγον· <legō>} “What {τί <tis>} arewetodo? {ποιοῦμεν,<poieō>} For {ὅτι<hoti>} this {οὗτος<houtos>} man {ὁ ἄνθρωπος<ho anthrōpos>} performs {ποιεῖ<poieō>} many {πολλὰ<polys>} signs. {σημεῖα;<sēmeion>}

11:48 - If {ἐὰν<ean>} we lethim {αὐτὸν<autos>} go on {ἀφῶμεν<aphiēmi>} like this, {οὕτως,<houtōs>} everyone {πάντες<pas>} willbelieve {πιστεύσουσιν <pisteuō>} in {εἰς <eis>} him, {αὐτόν,<autos>} and {καὶ<kai>} the {οἱ<ho>} Romans {Ῥωμαῖοι <Rhōmaios>} willcome {ἐλεύσονται<erchomai>} and {καὶ<kai>} take away {ἀροῦσιν<airō>} both {καὶ <kai>} our {ἡμῶν<egō>} place {τὸν τόπον<ho topos>} and {καὶ<kai>} ournation.” {τὸ ἔθνος.<ho ethnos>}

11:49 - But {δέ<de>} one {Εἷς τις<heis tis>} of {ἐξ<ek>} them, {αὐτῶν <autos>} Caiaphas, {Καϊάφας,<Kaiaphas>} whowas {ὢν<eimi>} high priest {ἀρχιερεὺς <archiereus>} that {ἐκείνου,<ekeinos>} year, {τοῦ ἐνιαυτοῦ<ho eniautos>} said {εἶπεν <legō>} tothem, {αὐτοῖς·<autos>} “You {ὑμεῖς<sy>} know {οἴδατε<oida>} nothing at all. {οὐκ οὐδέν,<ou oudeis>}

11:50 - Nor {οὐδὲ<oude>} doyouunderstand {λογίζεσθε<logizomai>} that {ὅτι<hoti>} itisbetter {συμφέρει<sympherō>} foryou {ὑμῖν<sy>} that {ἵνα <hina>} one {εἷς<heis>} man {ἄνθρωπος<anthrōpos>} shoulddie {ἀποθάνῃ <apothnēskō>} for {ὑπὲρ <hyper>} the {τοῦ<ho>} people, {λαοῦ,<laos>} • {καὶ<kai>} not {μὴ<mē>} thatthe {τὸ <ho>} whole {ὅλον<holos>} nation {ἔθνος<ethnos>} shouldperish.” {ἀπόληται.<apollymi>}

11:51 - Hedid → • {δὲ<de>} not {οὐκ<ou>} say {εἶπεν,<legō>} this {τοῦτο <houtos>} ofhis {ἑαυτοῦ<heautou>} ownaccord, {ἀφ᾽<apo>} but {ἀλλὰ<alla>} being {ὢν <eimi>} high priest {ἀρχιερεὺς<archiereus>} that {ἐκείνου<ekeinos>} year {τοῦ ἐνιαυτοῦ<ho eniautos>} heprophesied {ἐπροφήτευσεν<prophēteuō>} that {ὅτι<hoti>} Jesus {Ἰησοῦς <Iēsous>} would {ἤμελλεν<mellō>} die {ἀποθνήσκειν <apothnēskō>} for {ὑπὲρ<hyper>} the {τοῦ<ho>} nation, {ἔθνους,<ethnos>}

11:52 - and {καὶ<kai>} not {οὐχ<ou>} for {ὑπὲρ<hyper>} the {τοῦ<ho>} nation {ἔθνους <ethnos>} only, {μόνον<monos>} but {ἀλλ᾽<alla>} also {καὶ<kai>} to {ἵνα <hina>} gather {συναγάγῃ<synagō>} into {εἰς<eis>} one {ἕν.<heis>} the {τὰ<ho>} children {τέκνα <teknon>} ofGod {τοῦ θεοῦ<ho theos>} who {τὰ <ho>} are scattered abroad. {διεσκορπισμένα<diaskorpizō>}

11:53 - So {οὖν<oun>} fromthat {ἐκείνης<ekeinos>} day {τῆς ἡμέρας<ho hēmera>} on {Ἀπ᾽<apo>} theymadeplans {ἐβουλεύσαντο<bouleuomai>} to {ἵνα <hina>} puthim {αὐτόν.<autos>} todeath. {ἀποκτείνωσιν<apokteinō>}

11:54 - Jesus {Ὁ Ἰησοῦς<ho Iēsous>} therefore {οὖν<oun>} no longer {οὐκέτι <ouketi>} walked {περιεπάτει<peripateō>} openly {παρρησίᾳ<parrēsia>} among {ἐν<en>} the {τοῖς <ho>} Jews, {Ἰουδαίοις,<Ioudaios>} but {ἀλλὰ<alla>} went {ἀπῆλθεν <aperchomai>} from there {ἐκεῖθεν<ekeithen>} to {εἰς<eis>} the {τὴν<ho>} region {χώραν<chōra>} near {ἐγγὺς <engys>} the {τῆς<ho>} wilderness, {ἐρήμου <erēmos>} to {εἰς<eis>} atown {πόλιν, <polis>} called {λεγομένην<legō>} Ephraim, {Ἐφραῒμ<Ephraim>} and there {κἀκεῖ <kakei>} hestayed {ἔμεινεν <menō>} with {μετὰ<meta>} the {τῶν<ho>} disciples. {μαθητῶν. <mathētēs>}

11:55 - Now {δὲ<de>} the {τὸ<ho>} Passover {πάσχα<pascha>} ofthe {τῶν<ho>} Jews {Ἰουδαίων,<Ioudaios>} was {Ἦν<eimi>} at hand, {ἐγγὺς<engys>} and {καὶ <kai>} many {πολλοὶ<polys>} went up {ἀνέβησαν<anabainō>} from {ἐκ<ek> the {τῆς<ho>} country {χώρας<chōra>} to {εἰς<eis>} Jerusalem {Ἱεροσόλυμα <Hierosolyma>} before {πρὸ <pro>} the {τοῦ<ho>} Passover {πάσχα <pascha>} to {ἵνα<hina>} purify {ἁγνίσωσιν <hagnizō>} themselves. {ἑαυτούς.<heautou>}

11:56 - They were looking for {ἐζήτουν<zēteō>} • {οὖν<oun>} Jesus {τὸν Ἰησοῦν <ho Iēsous>} and {καὶ<kai>} saying {ἔλεγον<legō>} to {μετ᾽<meta>} one another {ἀλλήλων<allēlōn>} astheystood {ἑστηκότες·<histēmi>} in {ἐν<en>} the {τῷ <ho>} temple, {ἱερῷ<hieron>} “What {τί<tis>} doyou {ὑμῖν,<sy>} think? {δοκεῖ <dokeō>} That {ὅτι<hoti>} hewillnotcome {ἔλθῃ<erchomai>} to {εἰς<eis>} the {τὴν<ho>} feast {ἑορτήν;<heortē>} at all?” {οὐ μὴ<oumē>}

11:57 - Now {δὲ<de>} the {οἱ<ho>} chief priests {ἀρχιερεῖς<archiereus>} and {καὶ <kai>} the {οἱ<ho>} Pharisees {Φαρισαῖοι<Pharisaios>} hadgiven {δεδώκεισαν <didōmi>} orders {ἐντολὰς<entolē>} that {ἵνα<hina>} if {ἐάν<ean>} anyone {τις<tis>} knew {γνῷ<ginōskō>} where {ποῦ<pou> hewas, {ἐστιν<eimi>} he should let {μηνύσῃ,<mēnyō>} themknow, ← so that {ὅπως<hopōs>} theymightarrest {πιάσωσιν<piazō>} him. {αὐτόν.<autos>}

Here is another example of the use of irony in John’s Gospel (cf. note on 9:13–34). Caiaphas, the high priest, unwittingly prophesied that Jesus’ death would be a vicarious, substitutionary atonement. The God of all grace is sovereignly at work, at all times and in all places. He sits in heaven and laughs derisively at those who plot and scheme against his saving purposes in his Son (Ps. 2:2–4).
