The Book of John - Chapter 12:1-11 - (ESV)

Mary Anoints Jesus at Bethany - {Interlinear <Greek>}



12:1 - Six {ἓξ<hex>} days {ἡμερῶν<hēmera>} before {πρὸ<pro>} the {τοῦ<ho>} Passover, {πάσχα<pascha>} Jesus {Ὁ Ἰησοῦς<hoIēsous>} therefore {οὖν<oun>} came {ἦλθεν<erchomai>} to {εἰς<eis>} Bethany, {Βηθανίαν,<Bēthania>} where {ὅπου<hopou>} Lazarus {Λάζαρος<Lazaros>} was, {ἦν<eimi>} whom {ὃν<hos>} Jesus {ὁ Ἰησοῦς.<ho Iēsous>} hadraised {ἤγειρεν<egeirō>} from {ἐκ<ek>} thedead. {νεκρῶν<nekros>}


12:2 - So {οὖν<oun>} theygave {ἐποίησαν<poieō>} adinner {δεῖπνον <deipnon>} forhim {αὐτῷ<autos>} there. {ἐκεῖ,<ekei>} • {καὶ<kai>} Martha {ἡ Μάρθα<ho Martha>} served, {διηκόνει·<diakoneō>} and {δὲ<de>} Lazarus {ὁ Λάζαρος <ho Lazaros>} was {ἦν <eimi>} one {εἷς<heis>} of {ἐκ<ek>} those {τῶν<ho>} reclining {ἀνακειμένων<anakeimai>} with {σὺν<syn>} him {αὐτῷ.<autos>} attable.

12:3 - Mary {ἡ Μαρία<ho Maria>} therefore {οὖν<oun>} took {λαβοῦσα<lambanō >} apound {λίτραν<litra>} ofexpensive {πολυτίμου<polytimos>} ointment {μύρου<myron>} madefrompure {πιστικῆς<pistikos>} nard, {νάρδου<nardos>} andanointed {ἤλειψεν<aleiphō>} the {τοὺς<ho>} feet {πόδας<pous>} ofJesus {τοῦ Ἰησοῦ<ho lēsous>} and {καὶ<kai>} wiped {ἐξέμαξεν<ekmassō>} his {αὐτοῦ· <autos>} feet {τοὺς πόδας<ho pous>} withher {αὐτῆς<autos>} hair. {ταῖς θριξὶν<ho thrix>} The {ἡ<ho>} • {δὲ <de>} house {οἰκία<oikia>} wasfilled {ἐπληρώθη <plēroō>} with {ἐκ<ek>} the {τῆς<ho>} fragrance {ὀσμῆς<osmē>} ofthe {τοῦ <ho>} perfume. {μύρου.<myron>}


12:4 - But {δὲ<de>} Judas {Ἰούδας<Ioudas>} Iscariot, {ὁ Ἰσκαριώτης<ho Iskariōtēs>} one {εἷς<heis>} ofhis {αὐτοῦ,<autos>} disciples {τῶν μαθητῶν<ho mathētēs>} (he who {ὁ <ho>} was about {μέλλων <mellō>} tobetray {παραδιδόναι· <paradidōmi>} him), {αὐτὸν <autos>} said, {λέγει<legō>}


12:5 - “Why {διὰ τί<dia tis>} wasthis {τοῦτο<houtos>} ointment {τὸ μύρον<ho myron>} not {οὐκ<ou>} sold {ἐπράθη<pipraskō>} forthree hundred {τριακοσίων <triakosioi>} denarii {δηναρίων<dēnarion>} and {καὶ<kai>} given {ἐδόθη<didōmi>} tothepoor?” {πτωχοῖς;<ptōchos>}


12:6 - Hesaid {εἶπεν<legō>} • {δὲ<de>} this, {τοῦτο<houtos>} not {οὐχ<ou>} because {ὅτι<hoti>} he {αὐτῷ,<autos>} cared {ἔμελεν<melei>} about {περὶ<peri>} the {τῶν<ho>} poor, {πτωχῶν<ptōchos>} but {ἀλλ᾽<alla>} because {ὅτι<hoti>} he was {ἦν<eimi>} athief, {κλέπτης<kleptēs>} and {καὶ<kai>} having charge {ἔχων<echō >} ofthe {τὸ<ho>} moneybag {γλωσσόκομον<glōssokomon>} he used to help himself to {ἐβάσταζεν. <bastazō>} what {τὰ<ho>} wasput {βαλλόμενα<ballō>} intoit.


12:7 - • {οὖν<oun>} Jesus {ὁ Ἰησοῦς·<ho Iēsous>} said, {Εἶπεν<legō>} “Leaveher {αὐτήν,<autos>} alone, {ἄφες<aphiēmi>} so that {ἵνα<hina>} shemaykeep {τηρήσῃ<tēreō>} it {αὐτό·<autos>} for {εἰς<eis>} the {τὴν<ho>} day {ἡμέραν<hēmera>} ofmy {μου<egō>} burial. {τοῦ νταφιασμοῦ<ho entaphiasmos>}


12:8 - For {γὰρ<gar>} the {τοὺς<ho>} poor {πτωχοὺς<ptōchos>} youalways {πάντοτε<pantote>} have {ἔχετε<echō>} with {μεθ᾽<meta>} you, <ἑαυτῶν,<heautou>} but {δὲ<de>} youdonot {οὐ<ou>} always {πάντοτε<pantote>} have {ἔχετε.<echō>} me.” {ἐμὲ<egō>}



The Plot to Kill Lazarus


12:9 - When • • {οὖν<oun>} the {ὁ<ho>} large {πολὺς<polys>} crowd {ὄχλος <ochlos>} of {ἐκ<ek>} the {τῶν<ho>} Jews {Ἰουδαίων<Ioudaios>} learned {Ἔγνω <ginōskō>} that {ὅτι<hoti>} Jesuswas {ἐστιν,<eimi>} there, {ἐκεῖ<ekei>} • {καὶ<kai> theycame, {ἦλθον<erchomai>} not {οὐ<ou>} • {τὸν<ho>} • {Ἰησοῦν<Iēsous>} only {μόνον<monos>} on account of {διὰ<dia>} him but {ἀλλ᾽<alla>} also {καὶ<kai>} to {ἵνα<hina>} see {ἴδωσιν<horaō>} Lazarus, {τὸν Λάζαρον<ho Lazaros>} whom {ὃν<hos>} hehadraised {ἤγειρεν<egeirō>} from {ἐκ<ek>} thedead. {νεκρῶν.<nekros>}


12:10 - So {δὲ<de>} the {οἱ<ho>} chief priests {ἀρχιερεῖς<archiereus>} madeplans {ἐβουλεύσαντο<bouleuomai>} to {ἵνα<hina>} putLazarus {τὸν Λάζαρον<ho Lazaros>} todeath {ἀποκτείνωσιν,<apokteinō>} as well, {καὶ<kai>}


12:11 - because {ὅτι<hoti>} on account of {δι᾽<dia>} him {αὐτὸν<autos>} many {πολλοὶ<polys> ofthe {τῶν<ho>} Jews {Ἰουδαίων<Ioudaios>} were going away {ὑπῆγον<hypagō>} and {καὶ<kai>} believing {ἐπίστευον<pisteuō>} in {εἰς<eis>} Jesus. {τὸν Ἰησοῦν.<ho Iēsous>}





 


The contrast between Mary and Judas could not be bolder. Mary reclines at Jesus’ feet in adoring love, offering extravagant devotion—anointing him for his burial. Judas sits in condescending arrogance, not only questioning Mary’s action but judging Jesus’ willing acceptance of such a gift. One is a worshiper; one is a thief. One gives sacrificial honor; the other seeks personal gain (Matt. 26:15). One demonstrates the way of grace; the other, the way of sin.


This story should remind us of a similar scene recorded in Luke’s Gospel, where an unnamed sinful woman washes Jesus’ feet with her tears, while Simon, a self-righteous Pharisee, “murders” Jesus in his heart (Luke 7:36–50). Those who have been forgiven much love much. Those who are greedy for much are greedy for more.
