The Book of John - Chapter 12:27-36 - (ESV)


The Son of Man Must Be Lifted Up -  {Interlinear <Greek>}



12:27 - “Now {Νῦν<nyn>} ismy {μου<egō>} soul {ἡ ψυχή<ho psychē>} troubled.

{τετάρακται,<tarassō>} And {καὶ< kai>} what {τί<tis>} shallIsay? {εἴπω;<legō>} ‘Father, {πάτερ,<patēr>} save {σῶσόν<sōzō>} me {με<egō>} from {ἐκ<ek>} this {ταύτης;<houtos>} hour’? {τῆς ὥρας<ho hōra>} But {ἀλλὰ<alla>} for this purpose {διὰ τοῦτο<dia houtos>} Ihavecome {ἦλθον<erchomai>} to {εἰς<eis>} this {ταύτην.<houtos>} hour. {τὴν ὥραν<ho hōra>}


12:28 - Father, {πάτερ,<patēr>} glorify {δόξασόν<doxazō>} your {σου<sy>} name.” {τὸ ὄνομα.<ho onoma>} Then {οὖν<oun>} avoice {φωνὴ<phōnē>} came {ἦλθεν <erchomai>} from {ἐκ<ek>} heaven: {τοῦ οὐρανοῦ·<ho ouranos>} • {kai} “Ihaveglorified {ἐδόξασα<doxazō>} it, • and {καὶ<kai>} Iwillglorify {δοξάσω.<doxazō>} itagain.” {πάλιν<palin>}


12:29 - The {ὁ<ho>} • {οὖν<oun>} crowd {ὄχλος<ochlos>} that {ὁ<ho>} stood {ἑστὼς<histēmi>} thereand {καὶ<kai>} heard {ἀκούσας<akouō>} itsaid {ἔλεγεν <legō>} thatithadthundered. {βροντὴν γεγονέναι.<brontē ginomai>} Others {ἄλλοι<allos>} said, {ἔλεγον·<legō>} “Anangel {ἄγγελος<angelos>} hasspoken {λελάληκεν.<laleō>} to him.” {αὐτῷ<autos>}


12:30 - Jesus {Ἰησοῦς<Iēsous>} answered, {Ἀπεκρίθη<apokrinomai>} • {καὶ<kai>} • {εἶπεν· <legō>} • {δι᾽<dia>} “This {αὕτη<houtos>} voice {ἡ φωνὴ<ho phōnē>} hascome {γέγονεν<ginomai>} • {ἀλλὰ<alla>} foryour {ὑμᾶς.<sy>} sake, {δι᾽<dia>} not {οὐ<ou>} mine. {ἐμὲ<egō>}


12:31 - Now {νῦν<nyn>} is {ἐστὶν<eimi>} thejudgment {κρίσις<krisis>} ofthis {τούτου·<houtos>} world; {τοῦ κόσμου<ho kosmos>} now {νῦν<nyn>} willthe {ὁ <ho>} ruler {ἄρχων<archōn>} ofthis {τούτου<houtos>} world {τοῦ κόσμου <ho kosmos>} becast {ἐκβληθήσεται<ekballō>} out. {ἔξω,<exō>}


12:32 - And I, {κἀγὼ<kagō>} when {ἐὰν< ean>} Iamlifted {ὑψωθῶ<hypsoō>} upfrom {ἐκ<ek>} the {τῆς<ho>} earth, {γῆς,<gē>} willdraw {ἑλκύσω<helkō>} all {πάντας <pas>} peopleto {πρὸς<pros>} myself.” {ἐμαυτόν.<emautou>}


12:33 - Hesaid {ἔλεγεν<legō>} this {τοῦτο<houtos>} • {δὲ<de>} toshow {σημαίνων <sēmainō>} bywhat kind of {ποίῳ<poios>} death {θανάτῳ<thanatos>} hewasgoing {ἤμελλεν<mellō>} todie. {ἀποθνήσκειν.<apothnēskō>}


12:34 - So {οὖν<oun>} the {ὁ<ho>} crowd {ὄχλος·<ochlos>} answered {Ἀπεκρίθη <apokrinomai>} him, {αὐτῷ<autos>} “We {ἡμεῖς<egō>} haveheard {ἠκούσαμεν <akouō>} from {ἐκ<ek>} the {τοῦ<ho>} Law {νόμου<nomos>} that {ὅτι<hoti>} the {ὁ<ho>} Christ {χριστὸς<Christos>} remains {μένει<menō>} forever. {εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα,<eis ho aiōn>} • {καὶ<kai>} How {πῶς<pōs>} canyou {σὺ<sy>} say {λέγεις<legō>} that {ὅτι<hoti>} the {τὸν<ho>} Son {υἱὸν<huios>} ofMan {τοῦ ἀνθρώπου; <ho anthrōpos>} must {δεῖ<deō>} belifted {ὑψωθῆναι<hypsoō>} up? ← {τίς<tis>} is {ἐστιν<eimi>} this {οὗτος<houtos>} Son {ὁ υἱὸς<ho huios>} ofMan?” {τοῦ ἀνθρώπου;<ho anthrōpos>}


12:35 - So {οὖν<oun>} Jesus {ὁ Ἰησοῦς·<ho Iēsous>} said {Εἶπεν<legō>} tothem, {αὐτοῖς<autos >} “The {τὸ<ho>} light {φῶς<phōs>} is {ἐστιν.<eimi>} among {ἐν<en>} you {ὑμῖν<sy>} foralittle {μικρὸν<mikros>} while {χρόνον<chronos>} longer. {ἔτι<eti>} Walk {περιπατεῖτε<peripateō>} while {ὡς<hōs>} youhave {ἔχετε,<echō>} the {τὸ<ho>} light, {φῶς<phōs>} lest {ἵνα μὴ<hina mē>} darkness {σκοτία <skotia>} overtake {καταλάβῃ·<katalambanō>} you. {ὑμᾶς<sy>} • {καὶ<kai>} The one who {ὁ<ho>} walks {περιπατῶν<peripateō>} in {ἐν<en>} the {τῇ <ho>} darkness {σκοτίᾳ<skotia>} doesnot {οὐκ<ou>} know {οἶδεν<oida>} where {ποῦ<pou>} heisgoing. {ὑπάγει.<hypagō>}


12:36 - While {ὡς<hōs>} youhave {ἔχετε,<echō>} the {τὸ<ho>} light, {φῶς <phōs>} believe {πιστεύετε<pisteuō>} in {εἰς<eis>} the {τὸ<ho>} light, {φῶς,<phōs>} that {ἵνα<hina>} youmaybecome {γένησθε.<ginomai>} sons {υἱοὶ<huios>} oflight.” {φωτὸς<phōs>} WhenJesus {Ἰησοῦς,<Iēsous>} hadsaid {ἐλάλησεν <laleō>} these {ταῦτα<houtos>} things, ← • {καὶ<kai>} hedeparted {ἀπελθὼν <aperchomai>} andhid {ἐκρύβη<kryptō>} himselffrom {ἀπ᾽<apo>} them. {αὐτῶν.<autos>}






 



First and foremost, the gospel is the good news of how God reconciles sinners to himself through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. But it is also the story of Jesus’ triumph over all evil and over Satan himself, “the ruler of this world.” Jesus came into the world to destroy him who holds the power of death (that is, the Devil) and to free those “who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery” (Heb. 2:15; cf. 1 John 3:8). His “bruised heel” secured the “crushed head” of the Serpent—fulfilling the first gospel promise (Gen. 3:15).


Satan’s defeat has already been secured, and the clock is ticking on his ultimate demise. His present flurry of fury is actually a sign that he knows his time is short (Rev. 12:12).
