14:1 - “Letnot {Μὴ<mē>} your {ὑμῶν<sy>} hearts {ἡ καρδία·<ho kardia>} be

troubled. {ταρασσέσθω<tarassō>} Believe {πιστεύετε<pisteuō>} in {εἰς<eis>} God; {τὸν θεὸν<ho theos>} believe {πιστεύετε.<pisteuō>} also {καὶ<kai>} in {εἰς<eis>} me. {ἐμὲ<egō>}


14:2 - In {ἐν<en>} my {μου<egō>} Father’s {τοῦ πατρός<ho patēr>} house {τῇ οἰκίᾳ <ho oikia>} are {εἰσιν·<eimi>} many {πολλαί<polys>} rooms. {μοναὶ<monē>} If {εἰ <ei>} • {δὲ <de>} itwerenot {μή,<mē>} so,wouldIhavetold {εἶπον ἂν<legō an>} you {ὑμῖν·<sy>} that {ὅτι<hoti>} Igo {πορεύομαι<poreuomai>} toprepare {ἑτοιμάσαι<hetoimazō>} aplace {τόπον<topos>} foryou? {ὑμῖν.<sy>}


14:3 - And {καὶ<kai>} if {ἐὰν<ean>} Igo {πορευθῶ<poreuomai>} and {καὶ<kai>} prepare {ἑτοιμάσω<hetoimazō>} aplace {τόπον<topos>} foryou, {ὑμῖν,<sy>} Iwillcome {ἔρχομαι<erchomai>} again {πάλιν<palin>} and {καὶ<kai>} willtake {παραλήμψομαι<paralambanō>} you {ὑμᾶς<sy>} to {πρὸς<pros>} myself, {ἐμαυτόν,<emautou>} that {ἵνα <hina>} where {ὅπου<hopou>} I {ἐγὼ<egō>} am {εἰμὶ<eimi>} you {ὑμεῖς<sy>} maybe {ἦτε.<eimi>} also. {καὶ <kai>}


14:4 - And {καὶ <kai>} youknow {οἴδατε<oida>} the {τὴν<ho>} way {ὁδόν.<hodos>} to where {ὅπου<hopou>} I {ἐγὼ<egō>} amgoing.” {ὑπάγω<hypagō>}


14:5 - Thomas {Θωμᾶς·< Thōmas>} said {Λέγει<legō>} tohim, {αὐτῷ<autos>} “Lord, {κύριε,<kyrios>} wedonot {οὐκ<ou>} know {οἴδαμεν<oida>} where {ποῦ<pou>} youaregoing. {ὑπάγεις· <hypagō>} How {πῶς <pōs>} can {δυνάμεθα <dynamai>} weknow {εἰδέναι;<oida>} the {τὴν<ho>} way?” {ὁδὸν<hodos>}


14:6 - Jesus {ὁ Ἰησοῦς·<ho Iēsous>} said {λέγει<legō>} tohim, {αὐτῷ<autos>} “I {ἐγώ <egō>} am {εἰμι<eimi>} the {ἡ<ho>} way, {ὁδὸς<hodos>} and {καὶ<kai>} the {ἡ <ho>} truth, {ἀλήθεια<alētheia>} and {καὶ<kai>} the {ἡ<ho>} life. {ζωή.<zōē>} No one {οὐδεὶς<oudeis>} comes {ἔρχεται<erchomai>} to {πρὸς<pros>} the {τὸν<ho>} Father {πατέρα<patēr>} except {εἰ μὴ<ei mē>} through {δι᾽<dia>} me. {ἐμοῦ.<egō>}


14:7 - If {εἰ<ei>} youhadknown {ἐγνώκειτέ<ginōskō>} me, {με,<egō>} youwouldhaveknown {ἂν ᾔδειτε·<an oida>} my {μου<egō>} Father {τὸν πατέρα <ho patēr>} also. {καὶ <kai>} From now on {ἀπάρτι<aparti>} youdoknow {γεινώσκετε <ginōskō>} him {αὐτὸν<autos>} and {καὶ<kai>} haveseen {ἑωράκατε <horaō>} him.” {αὐτόν.<autos>}


14:8 - Philip {Φίλιππος·<Philippos>} said {λέγει<legō>} tohim, {αὐτῷ<autos>} “Lord, {κύριε,<kyrios>} show {δεῖξον<deiknymi>} us {ἡμῖν<egō>} the {τὸν<ho>} Father, {πατέρα,<patēr>} and {καὶ<kai>} itisenough {ἀρκεῖ <arkeō>} forus.” {ἡμῖν.<egō>}


14:9 - Jesus {ὁ Ἰησοῦς·<ho Iēsous>} said {λέγει <legō>} tohim, {αὐτῷ<autos>} “HaveIbeen {εἰμι,<eimi>} with {μεθ᾽<meta>} you {ὑμῶν<sy>} so {τοσοῦτον <tosoutos>} long, {χρόνον<chronos>} and {καὶ<kai>} youstilldonot {οὐκ <ou>} know {ἔγνωκάς <ginōskō>} me, {με,<egō>} Philip? {Φίλιππε;<Philippos>} Whoever {ὁ <ho>} hasseen {ἑωρακὼς<horaō>} me {ἐμὲ<egō>} hasseen {ἑώρακεν<horaō>} the {τὸν<ho>} Father. {πατέρα·<patēr>} How {πῶς<pōs>} canyou {σὺ<sy>} say, {λέγεις·<legō>} ‘Show {δεῖξον <deiknymi>} us {ἡμῖν<egō>} the {τὸν<ho>} Father’? {πατέρα;<patēr>}


14:10 - Doyounot {οὐ<ou>} believe {πιστεύεις<pisteuō>} that {ὅτι<hoti>} I {ἐγὼ {egō>} amin {ἐν<en>} the {τῷ<ho>} Father {πατρὶ<patēr>} and {καὶ<kai>} the {ὁ<ho>} Father {πατὴρ<patēr>} is {ἐστιν; <eimi>} in {ἐν<en>} me? {ἐμοί<egō>} The {τὰ<ho>} words {ῥήματα<rhēma>} that {ἃ<hos>} I {ἐγὼ<egō>} say {λέγω<legō>} toyou {ὑμῖν<sy>} Idonot {οὐ< ou>} speak {λαλῶ·<laleō>} onmy {ἐμαυτοῦ<emautou>} ownauthority, {ἀπ᾽<apo>} but {δὲ<de>} the {ὁ <ho>} Father {πατὴρ<patēr>} whodwells {μένων<menō>} in {ἐν<en>} me {ἐμοὶ <egō>} does {ποιεῖ<poieō>} his {αὐτοῦ.<autos>} works. {τὰ ἔργα<ho ergon>}


14:11 - Believe {πιστεύετέ<pisteuō>} me {μοι<egō>} that {ὅτι<hoti>} I {ἐγὼ<egō>} amin {ἐν<en>} the {τῷ<ho>} Father {πατρὶ<patēr>} and {καὶ <kai>} the {ὁ<ho>} Father {πατὴρ <patēr>} isin {ἐν<en>} me, {ἐμοί·<egō>} or else {εἰ δὲ μή,<ei de mē>} believe {πιστεύετε.<pisteuō>} on account of {διὰ<dia>} the {τὰ <ho>} works {ἔργα< ergon>} themselves. {αὐτὰ<autos>}


14:12 - “Truly, {Ἀμὴν<amēn>} truly, {ἀμὴν<amēn>} Isay {λέγω<legō>} toyou, {ὑμῖν· <sy>} whoever {ὁ<ho>} believes {πιστεύων<pisteuō>} in {εἰς<eis>} me {ἐμέ,<egō>} willalso {κἀκεῖνος<kakeinos>} do {ποιήσει<poieō>} the {τὰ<ho>} works {ἔργα<ergon>} that {ἃ <hos>} I {ἐγὼ<egō>} do; {poieō>} and {καὶ<kai>} greater {μείζονα<meizōn>} worksthanthese {τούτων<houtos>} willhedo, {ποιήσει,<poieō>} because {ὅτι<hoti>} I {ἐγὼ<egō>} amgoing {πορεύομαι.<poreuomai>} to {πρὸς<pros>} the {τὸν<ho>} Father. {πατέρα<patēr>}


14:13 - • {καὶ<kai>} Whatever {ὅ τι ἂν<hos tis an>} youask {αἰτήσητε<aiteō>} in {ἐν <en>} my {μου,<egō>} name, {τῷ ὀνόματί<ho onoma>} this {τοῦτο <houtos>} Iwilldo, {ποιήσω,<poieō>} that {ἵνα<hina>} the {ὁ<ho>} Father {πατὴρ<patēr>} maybeglorified {δοξασθῇ<doxazō>} in {ἐν<en>} the {τῷ<ho>} Son. {υἱῷ.<huios>}


14:14 - If {ἐάν<ean>} youask {αἰτήσητέ<aiteō>} me {με<egō>} anything {τι<tis>} in {ἐν <en>} my {μου,<egō>} name, {τῷ ὀνόματί<ho onoma>} I {ἐγὼ<egō >} willdo {ποιήσω. <poieō>} it.





 


Having withdrawn from the crowds of Jerusalem, Jesus pours his time and efforts into his band of apostles—whose lives and witness will be an extension of his own. In comforting his disciples, Jesus gives us an extraordinary summary of who he is and what he came from heaven to do on our behalf. Though most often read at funerals, these familiar words prepare us for life long before we face death. Present relationship, comfort, and security with Jesus is being stressed more so than our future place of residence.


Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. By boldly affirming these three categories, we can see how Jesus fulfills the three main offices God provided for his covenant people: prophet, priest, and king. As prophet, Jesus is the truth of the Father—he is the Word made flesh, the final word God has spoken to his people (Heb. 1:2). As priest, Jesus is the way to the Father—he is both the sacrifice for our sins and the Mediator of the new covenant (Heb. 12:24). As king, Jesus is the life from the sovereign giver of life, the eternal Father—who gives life now and in the coming age for eternity (Heb. 6:5). He is the King whom the Father has already installed in Zion (Ps. 2:6) and the ruler over the kings of the earth (Rev. 1:5).




The promise of “greater works” presupposes Jesus’ ongoing work in the world, as prophet, priest, and king—by which his purposes will be amplified by his multiplying believers and expanding the church. As the head of the church and the reigning King, Jesus continues his work in the world through his people indwelt by his Spirit. Our work for Jesus is really our work with Jesus. He is the One making all things new, and he does so in us and through us. He has made us to be a “kingdom, priests to his God and Father” (Rev. 1:6)
