14:18 - “Iwillnot {οὐκ<ou>} leave {ἀφήσω<aphiēmi>} you {ὑμᾶς<sy>} asorphans; {ὀρφανούς, <orphanos>} Iwillcome {ἔρχομαι<erchomai>} to {πρὸς<pros>} you. {ὑμᾶς.<sy>}


14:19 - Yet {Ἔτι<eti>} alittle {μικρὸν<mikros>} whileand {καὶ<kai>} the {ὁ <ho>} world {κόσμος<kosmos>} willsee {θεωρεῖ,<theōreō>} me {με<egō>} no more, {οὐκέτι <ouketi>} but {δὲ <de>} you {ὑμεῖς <sy>} willsee {θεωρεῖτέ <theōreō>} me. {με·<egō>} Because {ὅτι<hoti>} I {ἐγὼ<egō>} live, {ζῶ, <zaō>} you {ὑμεῖς<sy>} also {καὶ<kai>} willlive. {ζήσετε.<zaō>}


14:20 - In {ἐν<en>} that {ἐκείνῃ<ekeinos>} day {τῇ ἡμέρᾳ<ho hēmera>} you {ὑμεῖς <sy>} will know {γνώσεσθε<ginōskō>} that {ὅτι<hoti>} I {ἐγὼ<egō>} amin {ἐν<en>} my {μου <egō>} Father, {τῷ πατρί<ho patēr>} and {καὶ<kai>} you {ὑμεῖς <sy>} in {ἐν <en>} me, {ἐμοὶ<egō>} and I {κἀγὼ<kagō>} in {ἐν<en>} you. {ὑμῖν.<sy>}

14:22 - Judas {Ἰούδας <Ioudas>} (not {οὐχ <ou>} Iscariot) {ὁ Ἰσκαριώτης· <ho Iskariōtēs>} said {Λέγει<legō>} tohim, {αὐτῷ<autos>} “Lord, {κύριε,<kyrios>} how {τί <tis>} is {γέγονεν<ginomai>} itthat {ὅτι<hoti>} youwill {μέλλεις <mellō>} manifest {ἐμφανίζειν <emphanizō>} yourself {σεαυτὸν<seautou>} tous, {ἡμῖν<egō>} and {καὶ <kai>} not {οὐχὶ <ouchi>} tothe {τῷ<ho>} world?” {κόσμῳ;<kosmos>}


14:23 - Jesus {Ἰησοῦς<Iēsous>} answered {Ἀπεκρίθη<apokrinomai>} • {καὶ<kai>} • {εἶπεν <legō>} him, {αὐτῷ·<autos>} “If {ἐάν<ean>} anyone {τις<tis>} loves {ἀγαπᾷ <agapaō>} me, {με, <egō>} hewillkeep {τηρήσει,<tēreō>} my {μου<egō>} word, {ho logos>} and {καὶ <kai>} my {μου<egō>} Father {ὁ πατήρ<ho patēr>} will love {ἀγαπήσει<agapaō>} him, {αὐτόν,<autos>} and {καὶ<kai>} wewillcome {ἐλευσόμεθα<erchomai>} to {πρὸς<pros>} him {αὐτὸν<autos>} and {καὶ<kai>} make {ποιησόμεθα.<poieō>} ourhome {μονὴν<monē>} with {παρ᾽<para>} him. {αὐτῷ<autos>}

14:29 - And {καὶ <kai>} now {νῦν <nyn>} Ihavetold {εἴρηκα <legō>} you {ὑμῖν<sy>} before {πρὶν<prin>} ittakes place, {γενέσθαι, <ginomai>} so that {ἵνα <hina>} when {ὅταν <hotan>} it does take place {γένηται,<ginomai>} youmaybelieve. {πιστεύσητε.<pisteuō>}


14:30 - I willno longer {Οὐκέτι<ouketi>} talk {λαλήσω<laleō>} much {πολλὰ <polys>} with {μεθ᾽<meta>} you, {ὑμῶν·<sy>} for {γὰρ<gar>} the {ὁ<ho>} ruler {ἄρχων, <archōn>} ofthisworld {τοῦ κόσμου <ho kosmos>} iscoming. {ἔρχεται<erchomai>} • {καὶ<kai>} Hehas {ἔχει <echō>} no {οὐκ οὐδέν,<ou oudeis>} claimon {ἐν <en>} me, {ἐμοὶ <egō>}


14:31 - but {ἀλλ᾽<alla>} Ido {ποιῶ. <poieō>} as {καθὼς<kathōs>} the {ὁ<ho>} Father {πατήρ,<patēr>} hascommanded {ἐνετείλατό<entellomai>} me, {μοι <egō>} so that {ἵνα <hina>} the {ὁ<ho>} world {κόσμος<kosmos>} mayknow {γνῷ<ginōskō>} that {ὅτι<hoti>} Ilove {ἀγαπῶ<agapaō>} the {τὸν<ho>} Father. {πατέρα,<patēr>} • {καὶ <kai>} • {οὕτως <houtōs>} Rise, {Ἐγείρεσθε,<egeirō>} letusgo {ἄγωμεν<agō>} from here. {ἐντεῦθεν.<enteuthen>}







 


As Jesus continues instructing his disciples in advance of his ascension, we enter the most profound teaching about the Trinity to be found anywhere in the Bible. There is much mystery here, but let us affirm what is clearly in the text. The better we know Jesus, the more Trinitarian we will become. The gospel is the means by which we enter the fellowship, love, and joy shared by the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit throughout eternity—a staggering thought indeed.


Jesus is the perfect Son whose obedience is counted as our own—the basis upon which the Father adopts us as his beloved children. The Spirit comes into our hearts as the spirit of sonship (Rom. 8:15)—freeing us from our orphan-like ways, leading us into greater intimacy with the Father and the Son. It is astonishing: we are the room in which the Trinity takes up residence (John 14:17, 20), becoming the new temple among all nations.
