16:26 - In {Ἐν<en>} that {ἐκείνῃ<ekeinos>} day {τῇ ἡμέρᾳ<ho hēmera>} youwill

ask {αἰτήσεσθε·<aiteō>} in {ἐν<en>} my {μου<egō>} name, {τῷ ὀνόματί <ho onoma>} and {καὶ <kai>} Idonot {οὐ<ou>} say {λέγω<legō>} toyou {ὑμῖν<sy>} that {ὅτι <hoti>} I {ἐγὼ<egō>} willask {ἐρωτήσω<erōtaō>} the {τὸν<ho>} Father {πατέρα <patēr>} onyour {ὑμῶν·<sy>} behalf; {περὶ <peri>}

16:27 - for {γὰρ<gar>} the {ὁ<ho>} Father {πατὴρ<patēr>} himself {αὐτὸς<autos>} loves {φιλεῖ <phileō>} you, {ὑμᾶς, <sy>} because {ὅτι <hoti>} you {ὑμεῖς <sy>} haveloved {πεφιλήκατε <phileō>} me {ἐμὲ<egō>} and {καὶ <kai>} havebelieved {πεπιστεύκατε <pisteuō>} that {ὅτι<hoti>} I {ἐγὼ<egō>} came {ἐξῆλθον.<exerchomai>} from {παρὰ<para>} God. {θεοῦ<theos>}

16:28 - Icame {ἐξῆλθον<exerchomai>} from {παρὰ<para>} the {τοῦ <ho>} Father {πατρὸς<patēr>} and {καὶ<kai>} havecome {ἐλήλυθα<erchomai>} into {εἰς<eis>} the {τὸν <ho>} world, {κόσμον·<kosmos>} andnow {πάλιν<palin>} Iamleaving {ἀφίημι <aphiēmi>} the {τὸν<ho>} world {κόσμον<kosmos>} and {καὶ<kai>} going {πορεύομαι<poreuomai>} to {πρὸς<pros>} the {τὸν<ho>} Father.” {πατέρα.<patēr>}

16:29 - His {αὐτοῦ·<autos>} disciples {οἱ μαθηταὶ <ho mathētēs>} said, {Λέγουσιν <legō >} “Ah, {ἴδε <ide>} now {νῦν<nyn>} youarespeaking {λαλεῖς<laleō>} plainly {ἐν παρρησίᾳ <en parrēsia>} and {καὶ<kai >} not {οὐδεμίαν <oudeis>} usingfigurative {παροιμίαν <paroimia>} speech! {λέγεις.<legō>}

16:30 - Now {νῦν<nyn>} weknow {οἴδαμεν<oida>} that {ὅτι<hoti>} youknow {οἶδας<oida>} all {πάντα<pas>} thingsand {καὶ<kai>} donot {οὐ <ou>} need {χρείαν ἔχεις <chreia echō>} anyone {τίς <tis>} to {ἵνα<hina>} question {ἐρωτᾷ.<erōtaō>} you; {σε <sy>} this is why {ἐν τούτῳ <en houtos>} webelieve {πιστεύομεν <pisteuō>} that {ὅτι <hoti>} youcame {ἐξῆλθες. <exerchomai>} from {ἀπὸ<apo>} God.” {θεοῦ<theos>}

16:31 - Jesus {Ἰησοῦς· <Iēsous>} answered {ἀπεκρίθη<apokrinomai>} them, {αὐτοῖς <autos>} “Doyou now {ἄρτι <arti>} believe? {πιστεύετε;<pisteuō>}

16:32 - Behold, {ἰδοὺ <idou>} thehour {ὥρα<hōra>} iscoming, {ἔρχεται <erchomai>} indeed {καὶ <kai>} ithascome, {ἐλήλυθεν<erchomai>} when {ἵνα <hina>} youwillbescattered, {σκορπισθῆτε<skorpizō>} each {ἕκαστος <hekastos>} to {εἰς<eis>} hisown {τὰ ἴδια <ho idios>} home,andwillleave {ἀφῆτε·<aphiēmi>} me {κἀμὲ <kagō>} alone. {μόνον<monos>} Yet {καὶ<kai>} Iam {εἰμὶ <eimi>} not {οὐκ<ou>} alone, {μόνος, <monos>} for {ὅτι <hoti>} the {ὁ <ho>} Father {πατὴρ<patēr>} is {ἐστιν.<eimi>} with {μετ᾽ <meta>} me. {ἐμοῦ <egō>}

16:33 - Ihavesaid {λελάληκα<laleō>} these {ταῦτα<houtos>} thingstoyou, {ὑμῖν,<sy>} that {ἵνα<hina>} in {ἐν<en>} me {ἐμοὶ<egō>} youmayhave {ἔχητε. <echō>} peace. {εἰρήνην <eirēnē>} In {ἐν<en>} the {τῷ <ho>} world {κόσμῳ <kosmos>} youwillhave {ἔχετε· <echō>} tribulation. {θλίψιν <thlipsis>} But {ἀλλὰ <alla>} takeheart; {θαρσεῖτε, <tharseō>} I {ἐγὼ <egō>} haveovercome {νενίκηκα <nikaō>} the {τὸν <ho>} world.” {κόσμον. <kosmos>}

Jesus continues to prepare his disciples for his “double leaving”—through death to the grave, and by ascension to the Father. Before his return, followers of Jesus should anticipate tribulation in this world, but the promise of overcoming stands, because Jesus is the overcomer par excellence. Indeed, the theme of living as an “overcomer” must be anchored in the gospel of grace. We overcome by the blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimony (Rev. 12:11)—that is, by placing our faith in the finished work of Christ and our union with him (1 John 5:4–5, 11–12). Overcoming is not something we do for Jesus; it is something we do by Jesus.
