16:6 - But {ἀλλ᾽<alla>} because {ὅτι<hoti>} I → have → said {λελάληκα<laleō>} these {ταῦτα<houtos>} things ← to → you, {ὑμῖν,<sy>} sorrow {ἡ λύπη <ho lypē>} has → filled {πεπλήρωκεν<plēroō>} your {ὑμῶν<sy>} heart. {τὴν καρδίαν.<ho kardia>}

16:9 - concerning {περὶ<peri>} sin, {ἁμαρτίας <hamartia>} • {μέν,<men>} because {ὅτι<hoti>} they → do → not {οὐ<ou>} believe {πιστεύουσιν<pisteuō>} in {εἰς<eis>} me; {ἐμέ·<egō>}

16:10 - concerning {περὶ <peri>} righteousness, {δικαιοσύνης<dikaiosynē>} • {δέ, <de>} because {ὅτι <hoti>} I → go {ὑπάγω,<hypagō>} to {πρὸς<pros>} the {τὸν <ho>} Father, {πατέρα<patēr>} and {καὶ<kai>} you → will → see {θεωρεῖτέ <theōreō>} me {με·<egō>} no longer; {οὐκέτι <ouketi>}

6:11 - concerning {περὶ<peri>} • {δὲ <de>} judgment, {κρίσεως, <krisis>} because {ὅτι<hoti>} the {ὁ <ho>} ruler {ἄρχων <archōn>} of → this {τούτου <houtos>} world {τοῦ κόσμου <ho kosmos>} is → judged. {κέκριται.<krinō>}

6:12 - “I → still {Ἔτι<eti>} have {ἔχω<echō>} many {πολλὰ <polys>} things ← to → say {λέγειν, <legō>} to → you, {ὑμῖν<sy>} but {ἀλλ᾽<alla>} you → cannot {οὐ δύνασθε <ou dynamai>} bear {βαστάζειν<bastazō>} them • now. {ἄρτι.<arti>}

16:13 - When {ὅταν<hotan>} • {δὲ <de>} the {τὸ<ho>} Spirit {πνεῦμα<pneuma>} of → truth {τῆς ἀληθείας, <ho alētheia>} comes, {ἔλθῃ <erchomai>} he {ἐκεῖνος, <ekeinos>} will → guide {ὁδηγήσει<hodēgeō>} you {ὑμᾶς< sy>} into {εἰς <eis>} all {πᾶσαν <pas>} the {τὴν <ho>} truth, {ἀλήθειαν.<alētheia>} for {γὰρ<gar>} he → will → not {οὐ<ou>} speak {λαλήσει <laleō>} on → his {ἑαυτοῦ,<heautou>} own ← authority, {ἀφ᾽ <apo>} but {ἀλλ᾽ <alla>} whatever {ὅσα <hosos>} he → hears {ἀκούσει <akouō>} he → will → speak, {λαλήσει<laleō>} and {καὶ <kai>} he → will → declare {ἀναγγελεῖ<anangellō>} to → you {ὑμῖν. <sy>} the things that {τὰ <ho>} are → to → come. {ἐρχόμενα <erchomai>}

16:14 - He {ἐκεῖνος <ekeinos>} will → glorify {δοξάσει,<doxazō>} me, {ἐμὲ <egō>} for {ὅτι <hoti>} • {ἐκ <ek>} he → will → take {λήμψεται <lambanō>} what {τοῦ<ho>} is • mine {ἐμοῦ <emos>} and {καὶ <kai>} declare {ἀναγγελεῖ <anangellō>} it • to → you. {ὑμῖν.<sy>}

John 16:4–15

With his departure in view—within hours, now—Jesus encourages the disciples about the future ministry of the Holy Spirit. Jesus is the quintessential encourager. As did his apostles, we share great blessings through the permanent indwelling of the Holy Spirit, whom we received the moment we believed in Jesus (Rom. 8:9; Gal. 3:2).

The Spirit is the consummate Helper. He frees us from trying to live the Christian life in our own power. The gospel is not “do more and try harder”; rather, it is “see Jesus and surrender to the Spirit.”

How can we have confidence that the writings of the New Testament are inspired and trustworthy? Because the Holy Spirit reminded the apostles of Jesus’ words and teachings (John 16:13). The Holy Spirit constantly draws attention to Jesus—nestling the gospel into our hearts and applying the finished work of Jesus to our lives (Rom. 8:16). To see and enjoy grace is the supreme work of the Spirit, as he bears witness to the truth and comfort of God’s Word in our hearts.
