18:37 - Then {οὖν <oun>} Pilate {ὁ Πειλᾶτος· <ho Pilatos>} said {Εἶπεν <legō>} tohim, {αὐτῷ <autos>} “So {οὐκοῦν <oukoun>} you {σύ; <sy>} are {εἶ <eimi>} aking?” {βασιλεὺς <basileus>} Jesus {ὁ Ἰησοῦς· <ho Iēsous>} answered, {ἀπεκρίθη <apokrinomai>} “You {σὺ <sy>} say {λέγεις <legō>} that {ὅτι <hoti>} Iam {εἰμι. <eimi>} aking. {βασιλεύς <basileus>} For this purpose {εἰς τοῦτο <eis houtos>} I {ἐγὼ <egō>} wasborn {γεγέννημαι <gennaō>} and {καὶ <kai>} for this purpose {εἰς τοῦτο <eis houtos>} Ihavecome {ἐλήλυθα <erchomai>} into {εἰς <eis>} the {τὸν <ho>} world— {κόσμον <kosmos>} to {ἵνα <hina>} bearwitness {μαρτυρήσω <martyreō>} tothe {τῇ <ho>} truth. {ἀληθείᾳ. <alētheia>} Everyone {πᾶς <pas>} who {ὁ <ho>} is {ὢν <eimi>} of {ἐκ <ek>} the {τῆς <ho>} truth {ἀληθείας <alētheia>} listens {ἀκούει <akouō>} tomy {μου <egō>} voice.” {τῆς φωνῆς. <ho phōnē>}

18:39 - But {δὲ <de>} you {ὑμῖν <sy>} have {ἔστιν <eimi>} acustom {συνήθεια <synētheia>} that {ἵνα <hina>} Ishouldrelease {ἀπολύσω < apolyō>} one {ἕνα <heis>} manforyou {ὑμῖν <sy>} at {ἐν <en>} the {τῷ <ho>} Passover. {πάσχα· <pascha>} So {οὖν <oun>} doyouwant {βούλεσθε <boulomai>} metorelease {ἀπολύσω <apolyō>} toyou {ὑμῖν < sy>} the {τὸν <ho>} King {βασιλέα <basileus>} ofthe {τῶν <ho>} Jews?” {Ἰουδαίων; <Ioudaios>}

When Jesus declared, “My kingdom is not of this world” (v. 36), he wasn’t implying that his kingdom has no implications for the earth and the world we now live in. Nothing could be further from the truth. Rather he was saying, “My kingdom is on another plane than the kingdoms erected in the fallen ways of humanity.” For in fact, Jesus’ kingdom is simultaneously over this world and very much in this world. He has come to make all things new.
