Jesus Delivered to Be Crucified - {Interlinear <Greek>}



19:1 - Then {Τότε <tote>} • {οὖν <oun>} Pilate {ὁ Πειλᾶτος <ho Pilatos>} took {ἔλαβεν <lambanō>} Jesus {τὸν Ἰησοῦν <ho Iēsous>} and {καὶ <kai>} flogged {ἐμαστίγωσεν. <mastigoō>} him.

19:2 - And {καὶ <kai>} the {οἱ <ho>} soldiers {στρατιῶται <stratiōtēs>} twisted {πλέξαντες <plekō>} togetheracrown {στέφανον <stephanos>} of {ἐξ <ek>} thorns {ἀκανθῶν <akantha>} andputiton {ἐπέθηκαν <epitithēmi>} his {αὐτοῦ <autos>} head {τῇ κεφαλῇ <ho kephalē>} and {καὶ <kai>} arrayed {περιέβαλον <periballō>} him {αὐτὸν <autos>} inpurple {πορφυροῦν <porphyrous>} robe. {ἱμάτιον <himation>}

19:4 - • {Καὶ <kai>} Pilate {ὁ Πειλᾶτος <ho Pilatos>} went {ἐξῆλθεν <exerchomai>} out {ἔξω <exō>} again {πάλιν <palin>} and {καὶ <kai>} said {λέγει <legō>} tothem, {αὐτοῖς· <autos>} “See, {ἴδε <ide>} Iambringing {ἄγω <agō>} him {αὐτὸν <autos>} out {ἔξω, <exō>} toyou {ὑμῖν <sy>} that {ἵνα <hina>} youmayknow {γνῶτε <ginōskō>} that {ὅτι <hoti>} Ifind {εὑρίσκω. <heuriskō>} no {οὐδεμίαν <oudeis>} guilt {αἰτίαν <aitia>} in {ἐν <en>} him.” {αὐτῷ <autos>}


19:5 - So {οὖν <oun>} Jesus {ὁ Ἰησοῦς <ho Iēsous>} came {Ἐξῆλθεν <exerchomai>} out, {ἔξω <exō>} wearing {φορῶν <phoreō>} the {τὸν <ho>} crown {στέφανον <stephanos>} ofthorns {ἀκάνθινον <akanthinos>} and {καὶ <kai>} the {τὸ <ho>} purple {πορφυροῦν <porphyrous>} robe. {ἱμάτιον. <himation>} Pilate • • {καὶ <kai>} said {λέγει <legō>} tothem, {αὐτοῖς· <autos>} “Behold {ἰδοὺ <idou>} the {ὁ <ho>} man!” {ἄνθρωπος. <anthrōpos>}


19:6 - When {ὅτε <hote>} • {οὖν <oun>} the {οἱ <ho>} chief priests {ἀρχιερεῖς <archiereus>} and {καὶ <kai>} the {οἱ <ho>} officers {ὑπηρέται, <hypēretēs>} saw {εἶδον <horaō>} him, {αὐτὸν <autos>} theycried {ἐκραύγασαν <krauga{zō>} out, ← {λέγοντες· <legō>} Crucify {σταύρωσον <stauroō>} him,crucify {σταύρωσον. <stauroō>} him!”Pilate {ὁ Πειλᾶτος· <ho Pilatos>} said {Λέγει <legō>} tothem, {αὐτοῖς <autos>} “Take {λάβετε <lambanō>} him {αὐτὸν <autos>} yourselves {ὑμεῖς <sy>} and {καὶ <kai>} crucify {σταυρώσατε· <stauroō>} him, • for {γὰρ <gar>} I {ἐγὼ <egō>} find {εὑρίσκω <heuriskō>} no {οὐχ <ou>} guilt {αἰτίαν. <aitia>} in {ἐν <en>} him.” {αὐτῷ <autos>}


19:7 - The {οἱ <ho>} Jews {Ἰουδαῖοι· <Ioudaios>} answered {Ἀπεκρίθησαν <apokrinomai>} him, {αὐτῷ <autos>} “We {ἡμεῖς <egō>} have {ἔχομεν, <echō>} alaw, {νόμον <nomos>} and {καὶ <kai>} according to {κατὰ <kata>} thatlaw {τὸν νόμον <ho nomos>} heought {ὀφείλει <opheilō>} todie {ἀποθανεῖν, <apothnēskō>} because {ὅτι <hoti>} hehas made {ἐποίησεν. <poieō>} himself {ἑαυτὸν <heautou>} theSon {υἱὸν <huios>} of God.” {θεοῦ <theos>}


19:8 - When {Ὅτε <hote>} • {οὖν <oun>} Pilate {ὁ Πειλᾶτος <ho Pilatos>} heard {ἤκουσεν <akouō>} this {τοῦτον <houtos>} statement, {τὸν λόγον <ho logos>} hewaseven more {μᾶλλον <mallon>} afraid. {ἐφοβήθη <phobeomai>}


19:9 • {καὶ <kai>} Heentered {εἰσῆλθεν <eiserchomai>} • {εἰς <eis>} hisheadquarters {τὸ πραιτώριον <ho praitōrion>} again {πάλιν <palin>} and {καὶ <kai>} said {λέγει <legō>} toJesus, {τῷ Ἰησοῦ· <ho Iēsous>} “Whereare {εἶ <eimi>} you {σύ; <sy>} from?” {πόθεν <pothen>} But {δὲ <de>} Jesus {ὁ Ἰησοῦς <ho Iēsous>} gave {ἔδωκεν <didōmi>} him {αὐτῷ. <autos>} no {οὐκ <ou>} answer. {ἀπόκρισιν <apokrisis>}


19:10 - So {οὖν <oun>} Pilate {ὁ Πειλᾶτος· <ho Pilatos>} said {λέγ ει <legō>} tohim, {αὐτῷ <autos>} “Youwillnot {οὐ <ou>} speak {λαλεῖς; <laleō>} tome? {ἐμοὶ <egō>} Doyounot {οὐκ <ou>} know {οἶδας <oida>} that {ὅτι <hoti>} → have {ἔχω <echō>} authority {ἐξουσίαν <exousia>} torelease {ἀπολῦσαί <apolyō>} you {σε <sy>} and {καὶ <kai>} authority {ἐξουσίαν <exousia>} • {ἔχω <echō>} tocrucify {σταυρῶσαί <stauroō>} you?” {σε; <sy>}


19:11 - Jesus {Ἰησοῦς· <Iēsous>} answered {ἀπεκρίθη <apokrinomai>} him, {αὐτῷ <autos>} “Youwouldhave {εἶχες <echō>} noauthority {ἐξουσίαν <exousia>} over {κατ᾽ <kata>} me {ἐμοῦ <egō>} at all {οὐκ οὐδεμίαν, <ou oudeis>} unless {εἰ μὴ <ei mē>} ithadbeen {ἦν <eimi>} given {δεδομένον <didōmi>} you {σοι <sy>} from above. {ἄνωθεν· <anōthen>} Therefore {διὰ τοῦτο <dia houtos>} he who {ὁ <ho>} deliveredme {μέ <egō>} over {παραδούς <paradidōmi>} toyou {σοι <sy>} has {ἔχει. <echō>} thegreater {μείζονα <meizōn>} sin.” {ἁμαρτίαν <hamartia>}


19:12 - From then on {ἐκ τούτου <ek houtos>} Pilate {ὁ Πειλᾶτος <ho Pilatos>} sought {ἐζήτει <zēteō>} torelease {ἀπολῦσαι <apolyō>} him, {αὐτόν. <autos>} but {δὲ <de>} the {Οἱ <ho>} Jews {Ἰουδαῖοι <Ioudaios>} cried {ἐκραύγασαν <kraugazō>} out, ← {λέγοντες· <legō>} If {ἐὰν <ean>} yourelease {ἀπολύσῃς, <apolyō>} this {τοῦτον <houtos>} man, ← youare {εἶ <eimi>} not {οὐκ <ou>} Caesar’s {τοῦ Καίσαρος. <ho Kaisar>} friend. {φίλος <philos>} Everyone {πᾶς <pas>} who {ὁ <ho>} makes {ποιῶν <poieō>} himself {ἑαυτὸν <heautou>} aking {βασιλέα <basileus>} opposes {ἀντιλέγει <antilegō>} Caesar.” {τῷ Καίσαρι. <ho Kaisar>}


19:13 - So {οὖν <oun>} whenPilate {Ὁ Πειλᾶτος <ho Pilatos>} heard {ἀκούσας <akouō>} these {τούτων <houtos>} words, {τῶν λόγων <ho logos>} hebrought {ἤγαγεν <agō>} Jesus {τὸν Ἰησοῦν <ho Iēsous>} out {ἔξω <exō>} and {καὶ <kai>} sat {ἐκάθισεν <kathizō>} downon {ἐπὶ <epi>} the judgment seat {βήματος <bēma>} at {εἰς <eis>} aplace {τόπον <topos>} called {λεγόμενον <legō>} The Stone Pavement, {Λιθόστρωτον, <lithostrōtos>} and {δὲ <de>} inAramaic {Ἑβραϊστὶ <Hebraisti>} Gabbatha. {Γαββαθά. <Gabbatha>}


19:14 - Now {δὲ <de>} itwas {ἦν <eimi>} thedayofPreparation {παρασκευὴ <paraskeuē>} ofthe {τοῦ <ho>} Passover. {πάσχα, <pascha>} Itwas {ἦν <eimi>} about {ὡς <hōs>} thesixth {ἕκτη. <hektos>} hour. {ὥρα <hōra>} • {καὶ <kai>} Hesaid {λέγει <legō>} tothe {τοῖς <ho>} Jews, {Ἰουδαίοις· <Ioudaios>} “Behold {ἴδε <ide>} your {ὑμῶν. <sy>} King!” {ὁ βασιλεὺς <ho basileus>}

19:16 - • {Τότε <tote>} So {οὖν <oun>} he delivered {παρέδωκεν <paradidōmi>} him {αὐτὸν <autos>} overtothem {αὐτοῖς <autos>} to {ἵνα <hina>} becrucified. {σταυρωθῇ. <stauroō>} So {οὖν <oun>} theytook {παρέλαβον <paralambanō>} Jesus, {τὸν Ἰησοῦν· <ho Iēsous>}







 


John’s account of the crucifixion is filled with gospel paradox and glorious providence. On the surface, Jesus seems to be completely subject to the whims of an approval-seeking Pilate and a frenzied mob of Jews. But when Pilate labeled Jesus “King of the Jews,” he was saying more than he knew.


Jesus was never more sovereign than when he submitted to death on the cross. This is why the refrain “to fulfill the Scripture” runs through the entire crucifixion story (vv. 24, 28, 36). Nothing was left to chance. No enemies—even as they acted according to their own volition—did anything that was unanticipated or outside the purpose of God’s sovereign providence and redemptive plan (Isa. 53:10; Rev. 13:7–8). This was the climax of all of human history. Jesus is not only the main character in this doxological drama of redemptive history; he is its writer, director, and producer.
