The Book of John - Chapter 21:20-25 - (ESV)

Jesus and the Beloved Apostle - {Interlinear <Greek>}

21:20 - Peter {ὁ Πέτρος <ho Petros>} turned {Ἐπιστραφεὶς <epistrephō>} andsaw {βλέπει <blepō>} the {τὸν <ho>} disciple {μαθητὴν <mathētēs>} whom {ὃν <hos>} Jesus {ὁ Ἰησοῦς <ho Iēsous>} loved {ἠγάπα <agapaō>} following {ἀκολουθοῦντα <akoloutheō>} them, • the one who {ὃς <hos>} also {καὶ <kai>} had leaned back {ἀνέπεσεν <anapiptō>} against {ἐπὶ <epi>} him {αὐτοῦ <autos>} during {ἐν <en>} the {τῷ <ho>} supper {δείπνῳ <deipnon>} • {τὸ <ho>} • {στῆθος <stēthos>} and

{καὶ <kai>} hadsaid, {εἶπεν· <legō>} “Lord, {κύριε, <kyrios>} who {τίς <tis>} is {ἐστιν <eimi>} itthat {ὁ <ho>} isgoingtobetray {παραδιδούς <paradidōmi>} you?” {σε; <sy>}

21:21 - When → • {οὖν <oun>} Peter {ὁ Πέτρος <ho Petros>} saw {ἰδὼν <horaō>} him, {τοῦτον <houtos>} hesaid {λέγει <legō>} toJesus, {τῷ Ἰησοῦ· <ho Iēsous>} “Lord, {κύριε, <kyrios>} • {δὲ <de>} what {τί; <tis>} aboutthis {οὗτος <houtos>} man?”

21:22 - Jesus {ὁ Ἰησοῦς· <ho Iēsous>} said {λέγει <legō>} tohim, {αὐτῷ <autos>} “If {ἐὰν <ean>} itismywill {θέλω <thelō>} thathe {αὐτὸν <autos>} remain {μένειν <menō>} until {ἕως <heōs>} Icome, {ἔρχομαι, <erchomai>} what {τί <tis>} isthatto {πρὸς <pros>} you? {σέ; <sy>} You {σύ <sy>} follow {ἀκολούθει. <akoloutheō>} me!” {μοι <egō>}

21:23 - So {οὖν <oun>} • {οὗτος <houtos>} the {ὁ <ho>} saying {λόγος <logos>} spread abroad {Ἐξῆλθεν <exerchomai>} among {εἰς <eis>} the {τοὺς <ho>} brothers {ἀδελφοὺς <adelphos>} that {ὅτι <hoti>} this {ἐκεῖνος <ekeinos>} disciple {ὁ μαθητὴς <ho mathētēs>} wasnot {οὐκ <ou>} todie; {ἀποθνήσκει· <apothnēskō>} yet {δὲ <de>} Jesus {ὁ Ἰησοῦς <ho Iēsous>} didnot {οὐκ <ou>} say {εἶπεν <legō>} tohim {αὐτῷ <autos>} that {ὅτι <hoti>} hewasnot {οὐκ <ou>} todie, {ἀποθνήσκει, <apothnēskō>} but, {ἀλλ᾽<alla>} “If {ἐὰν <ean>} itismywill {θέλω <thelō>} thathe {αὐτὸν <autos>} remain {μένειν <menō>} until {ἕως <heōs>} Icome, {ἔρχομαι, <erchomai>} what {τί <tis>} isthatto {πρὸς <pros>} you?” {σέ; <sy>}

21:24 - This {οὗτός <houtos>} is {ἐστιν <eimi>} the {ὁ <ho>} disciple {μαθητὴς <mathētēs>} who {ὁ <ho>} isbearingwitness {μαρτυρῶν <martyreō>} about {περὶ <peri>} these {τούτων <houtos>} things, ← and {καὶ <kai>} whohaswritten {γράψας <graphō>} these {ταῦτα, <houtos>} things, ← and {καὶ <kai>} weknow {οἴδαμεν <oida>} that {ὅτι <hoti>} his {αὐτοῦ. <autos>} testimony {ἡ μαρτυρία <ho martyria>} is {ἐστιν <eimi>} true. {ἀληθής <alēthēs>}

21:25 - Now {δὲ <de>} thereare {Ἔστιν <eimi>} also {καὶ <kai>} many {πολλὰ <polys>} other {ἄλλα <allos>} thingsthat {ἃ <hos>} Jesus {ὁ Ἰησοῦς <ho Iēsous>} did. {ἐποίησεν <poieō>} Wereevery {καθ᾽ <kata>} one {ἕν, <heis>} ofthem {ἅτινα <hostis>} tobewritten, {ἐὰν γράφηται <ean graphō>} Isuppose {οἶμαι <oiomai>} thatthe {τὸν <ho>} world {κόσμον <kosmos>} itself {αὐτὸν <autos>} couldnot {οὐδ᾽ <oude>} contain {χωρῆσαι <chōreō>} the {τὰ <ho>} books {βιβλία. <biblion>} thatwouldbewritten. {γραφόμενα <graphō>}

Peter had just been told to expect a death similar to the one his Savior experienced, but his thoughts immediately shifted to John. A fully restored Peter is not a fully transformed Peter. How easy it is for us to become distracted and envious of one another’s callings. But the Good Shepherd, who knows us by name, leads us by decree. Jesus gives us saving grace and he also gives us serving grace. There are no little people or little places in God’s story.

All things necessary for our salvation are written in the Bible. But the gospel will continue to write stories of Jesus’ glory and grace wherever it is preached.
