3:24 - for {γὰρ<gar>} John {ὁ Ἰωάννης.<ho Iōannēs>} hadnot yet {οὔπω<oupō>} been {ἦν<eimi>} put {βεβλημένος<ballō>} in {εἰς<eis>} prison). {τὴν φυλακὴν <ho phylakē>}


3:25 - Now {οὖν<oun>} adiscussion {ζήτησις<zētēsis>} arose {ἐγένετο <ginomai>} between {ἐκ<ek>} someofJohn’s {Ἰωάννου<Iōannēs>} disciples {τῶν μαθητῶν <ho mathētēs>} and {μετὰ<meta>} a Jew {Ἰουδαίου<Ioudaios>} over {περὶ<peri>} purification. {καθαρισμοῦ.<katharismos>}


3:26 - And {καὶ<kai>} theycame {ἦλθον<erchomai>} to {πρὸς<pros>} John {τὸν Ἰωάννην<ho Iōannēs>} and {καὶ<kai>} said {εἶπαν<legō>} tohim, {αὐτῷ·<autos>} “Rabbi, {ῥαββεί,<rhabbei>} he who {ὃς<hos>} was {ἦν<eimi>} with {μετὰ<meta>} you {σοῦ<sy>} across {πέραν<peran>} the {τοῦ<ho>} Jordan, {Ἰορδάνου,<Iordanēs>} towhom {ᾧ<hos>} you {σὺ<sy>} borewitness — {μεμαρτύρηκας,<martyreō>} look, {ἴδε<ide>} he {οὗτος<houtos>} isbaptizing, {βαπτίζει,<baptizō>} and {καὶ<kai>} all {πάντες<pas>} aregoing {ἔρχονται<erchomai>} to {πρὸς<pros>} him.” {αὐτόν.<autos>}


3:27 - John {Ἰωάννης<Iōannēs>} answered, {ἀπεκρίθη<apokrinomai>} • καὶ<kai>} • εἶπεν·<legō>} “Aperson {ἄνθρωπος<anthrōpos>} cannot {οὐ δύναται <ou dynamai>} receive {λαμβάνειν<lambanō>} even one thing {οὐδὲν<oudeis>} unless {ἐὰν μὴ<ean mē>} itis {ᾖ<eimi>} given {δεδομένον<didōmi>} him {αὐτῷ<autos>} from {ἐκ<ek>} heaven. {τοῦ οὐρανοῦ.<ho ouranos>}


3:28 - You {ὑμεῖς<sy>} yourselves {αὐτοὶ<autos>} bearme {μοι<egō>} witness, {μαρτυρεῖτε<martyreō>} that {ὅτι<hoti>} Isaid, {εἶπον·<legō>} ‘I {ἐγὼ<egō>} am {εἰμὶ <eimi>} not {οὐκ<ou>} the {ὁ<ho>} Christ, {χριστός,<Christos>} but {ἀλλ᾽<alla>} • ὅτι <hoti>} Ihavebeen {εἰμὶ<eimi>} sent {ἀπεσταλμένος<apostellō>} before {ἔμπροσθεν<emprosthen>} him.’ {ἐκείνου.<ekeinos>}


3:29 - The one who {Ὁ<ho>} has {ἔχων<echō>} the {τὴν<ho>} bride {νύμφην <nymphē>} is {ἐστίν.<eimi>} thebridegroom. {νυμφίος<nymphios>} The {ὁ<ho>} • {δὲ<de>} friend {φίλος<philos>} ofthe {τοῦ<ho>} bridegroom, {νυμφίου,<nymphios>} who {ὁ<ho>} stands {ἑστηκὼς<histēmi>} and {καὶ <kai>} hears {ἀκούων<akouō>} him, {αὐτοῦ,<autos>} rejoices {χαίρει<chairō>} greatly {χαρᾷ <chara>} at {διὰ<dia>} the {τοῦ<ho>} bridegroom’s {νυμφίου.<nymphios>} voice. {τὴν φωνὴν<ho phōnē>} Therefore {οὖν<oun>} this {αὕτη<houtos>} joy {ἡ χαρὰ<ho chara>} ofmine {ἡ ἐμὴ<ho emos>} isnowcomplete. {πεπλήρωται.<plēroō>}


3:30 - He {ἐκεῖνον<ekeinos>} must {δεῖ<deō>} increase, {αὐξάνειν,<auxanō>} but {δὲ <de>} I {ἐμὲ<egō>} mustdecrease.” {ἐλαττοῦσθαι.<elattoō>}


3:31 - He who {ὁ<ho>} comes {ἐρχόμενος<erchomai>} from above {ἄνωθεν <anōthen>} is {ἐστίν.<eimi>} above {ἐπάνω<epanō>} all. {πάντων<pas>} He who {ὁ<ho>} is {ὢν<eimi>} of {ἐκ<ek>} the {τῆς<ho>} earth {γῆς<gē>} belongs {ἐστιν<eimi>} to {ἐκ<ek>} the {τῆς<ho>} earth {γῆς<gē>} and {καὶ<kai>} speaks {λαλεῖ.<laleōin>} an earthly way. {ἐκ τῆς γῆς<ek ho gē>} He who {ὁ<ho>} comes {ἐρχόμενος<erchomai>} from {ἐκ<ek>} heaven {τοῦ οὐρανοῦ <ho ouranos>} is {ἐστίν·<eimi>} above {ἐπάνω<epanō>} all. {πάντων<pas>}


3:32 - Hebearswitness {μαρτυρεῖ,<martyreō>} towhat {ὃ<hos>} hehasseen {ἑώρακεν<horaō>} and {καὶ<kai>} heard, {ἤκουσεν,<akouō>} • {τοῦτο <houtos>} yet {καὶ<kai>} no one {οὐδεὶς<oudeis>} receives {λαμβάνει.<lambanō>} his {αὐτοῦ<autos>} testimony. {τὴν μαρτυρίαν<ho martyria>}

3:33 - Whoever {ὁ<ho>} receives {λαβὼν<lambanō>} his {αὐτοῦ<autos>} testimony {τὴν μαρτυρίαν<ho martyria>} setshisseal {ἐσφράγισεν<sphragizō>} tothis, • that {ὅτι <hoti>} God {ὁ θεὸς<ho theos>} is {ἐστιν.<eimi>} true. {ἀληθής<alēthēs>}


3:34 - For {γὰρ<gar>} hewhom {ὃν<hos>} God {ὁ θεός,<ho theos>} hassent {ἀπέστειλεν<apostellō>} utters {λαλεῖ·<laleō>} the {τὰ<ho>} words {ῥήματα<rhēma>} ofGod, {τοῦ θεοῦ<ho theos>} for {γὰρ<gar>} hegives {δίδωσιν<didōmi>} the {τὸ<ho>} Spirit {πνεῦμα.<pneuma>} without {οὐ ἐκ<ou ek>} measure. {μέτρου<metron>}


3:35 - The {ὁ<ho>} Father <πατὴρ<patēr>} loves {ἀγαπᾷ<agapaō>} the {τὸν<ho>} Son {υἱὸν<huios>} and {καὶ<kai>} hasgiven {δέδωκεν<didōmi>} all {πάντα<pas>} thingsinto {ἐν<en>} his {αὐτοῦ.<autos>} hand. {τῇ χειρὶ<ho cheir>}


3:36 - Whoever {ὁ<ho>} believes {πιστεύων<pisteuō>} in {εἰς<eis>} the {τὸν<ho>} Son {υἱὸν<huios>} has {ἔχει<echō>} eternal {αἰώνιον·<aiōnios>} life; {ζωὴν<zōē>} whoever {ὁ<ho>} • {δὲ<de>} does not obey {ἀπειθῶν<apeitheō>} the {τῷ<ho>} Son {υἱῷ<huios>} shallnot {οὐκ<ou>} see {ὄψεται<horaō>} life, {ζωήν,<zōē>} but {ἀλλ᾽<alla>} the {ἡ<ho>} wrath {ὀργὴ<orgē>} ofGod {τοῦ θεοῦ<ho theos>} remains {μένει<menō>} on {ἐπ᾽<epi>} him. {αὐτόν. <autos>}




 

John 3:22-36 -


The transition from the era of anticipation to the age of fulfillment continued as John the Baptist helped his disciples shift their focus even more expressly onto Jesus. The apostle John cites John the Baptist’s testimony in terms that will become one of the apostle’s favorite metaphors for describing the rich relationship Jesus establishes with his people: as Messiah, Jesus is the perfect bridegroom who came from heaven to make a most unlikely, unworthy bride (the church) his wife. Jesus did this by taking upon himself the wrath we deserve in order to give us the favor we could never earn (Eph. 5:22–33).


It is important to note that those rescued from wrath are granted eternal life because they believe, while those who are condemned experience wrath because they disobey (John 3:36). The basis of God’s judgment is his just sentence for sin; the basis of our salvation is God’s grace toward those who put their faith in his Son’s provision for them. Disobedience alone results in wrath. Faith alone results in salvation.
