Jesus and the Woman of Samaria - {Interlinear <Greek>}


4:1 - Now {οὖν<oun>} when {Ὡς<hōs>} Jesus {ὁ Ἰησοῦς<ho Iēsous>} learned {ἔγνω <ginōskō>} that {ὅτι<hoti>} the {οἱ<ho>} Pharisees {Φαρισαῖοι<Pharisaios>} hadheard {ἤκουσαν<akouō>} that {ὅτι<hoti>} Jesus {Ἰησοῦς<Iēsous>} wasmaking {ποιεῖ<poieō>} and {καὶ<kai>} baptizing {βαπτίζει<baptizō>} more {πλείονας<pleiōn>} disciples {μαθητὰς <mathētēs>} than {ἢ<ē>} John {Ἰωάννης,<Iōannēs>}


4:2 - (although {καίτοιγε<kaitoige>} Jesus {Ἰησοῦς<Iēsous>} himself {αὐτὸς<autos>} didnot {οὐκ<ou>} baptize, {βάπτιζεν<baptizō>} but only {ἀλλ᾽<alla>} his {αὐτοῦ,<autos>} disciples), {οἱ μαθηταὶ<homathētēs>}


4:3 - heleft {ἀφῆκεν<aphiēmi>} Judea {τὴν Ἰουδαίαν<ho Ioudaia>} and {καὶ<kai>} departed {ἀπῆλθεν<aperchomai>} again {πάλιν<palin>} for {εἰς<eis>} Galilee. {τὴν Γαλιλαίαν.<ho Galilaia>}


4:4 - And {δὲ<de>} he {αὐτὸν<autos>} had {ἔδει<deō>} topass {διέρχεσθαι <dierchomai>} through {διὰ<dia>} Samaria. {τῆς Σαμαρείας.<ho Samareia>}


4:5 - So {οὖν<oun>} hecame {ἔρχεται<erchomai>} to {εἰς<eis>} atown {πόλιν <polis>} ofSamaria {τῆς Σαμαρείας<ho Samareia>} called {λεγομένην<legō>} Sychar, {Συχάρ,<Sychar>} near {πλησίον<plēsi>} on the {τοῦ<ho>} field {χωρίου <chōrion>} that {ὃ<hos>} Jacob {Ἰακὼβ<Iakōb>} hadgiven {ἔδωκεν<didōmi>} tohis {αὐτοῦ·<autos>} son {τῷ υἱῷ<ho huios>} Joseph. {Ἰωσὴφ<Iōsēph>}


4:6 - • {δὲ<de>} Jacob’s {τοῦ Ἰακώβ.<ho Iakōb>} well {πηγὴ<pēgē>} was {ἦν<eimi>} there; {ἐκεῖ<ekei>} so {οὖν<oun>} Jesus, {Ὁ Ἰησοῦς<ho Iēsous>} wearied {κεκοπιακὼς<kopiaō>} as he was {οὕτως<houtōs>} from {ἐκ<ek>} hisjourney, {τῆς ὁδοιπορίας<ho hodoiporia>} wassitting {ἐκαθέζετο<kathezomai>} beside {ἐπὶ <epi>} the {τῇ<ho>} well. {πηγῇ·<pēgē>} Itwas {ἦν<eimi>} about {ὡς<hōs>} thesixth {ἕκτη.<hektos>} hour. {ὥρα <hōra>}


4:7 - Awoman {γυνὴ<gynē>} from {ἐκ<ek>} Samaria {τῆς Σαμαρείας<ho Samareia>} came {Ἔρχεται<erchomai>} todraw {ἀντλῆσαι<antleō>} water. {ὕδωρ.<hydōr>} Jesus {ὁ Ἰησοῦς·<ho Iēsous>} said {λέγει<legō>} toher, {αὐτῇ<autos>} “Give {δός<didōmi>} me {μοι<egō>} adrink.” {πεῖν.<pinō}


4:8 - (For {γὰρ<gar>} his {αὐτοῦ<autos>} disciples {οἱ μαθηταὶ<ho mathētēs>} had gone away {ἀπεληλύθεισαν<aperchomai>} into {εἰς<eis>} the {τὴν<ho>} city {πόλιν <polis>} to {ἵνα<hina>} buy {ἀγοράσωσιν.<agorazō>} food.) {τροφὰς<trophē>}


4:9 - • {οὖν<oun>} The {ἡ<ho>} Samaritan {ἡ Σαμαρεῖτις·<ho Samareitis>} woman {γυνὴ<gynē>} said {λέγει<legō>} tohim, {αὐτῷ<autos>} “How {πῶς<pōs>} isitthatyou, {σὺ<sy>} aJew, {Ἰουδαῖος<Ioudaios>} • {ὢν<eimi>} ask {αἰτεῖς<aiteō>} foradrink {πεῖν<pinō>} from {παρ᾽<para>} me, {ἐμοῦ<egō>} awoman {γυναικὸς<gynē>} ofSamaria?” {Σαμαρείτιδος<Samareitis>} • {οὔσης;<eimi>} (For {γὰρ<gar>} Jews {Ἰουδαῖοι<Ioudaios>} haveno {οὐ<ou>} dealings with {συνχρῶνται<synchraomai>} Samaritans.) {Σαμαρείταις.<Samareitēs>}


4:10 - Jesus {Ἰησοῦς<Iēsous>} answered {Ἀπεκρίθη<apokrinomai>} • {καὶ<kai>} • {εἶπεν<legō>} her, {αὐτῇ·<autos>} “If {εἰ<ei>} youknew {ᾔδεις<oida>} the {τὴν <ho>} gift {δωρεὰν<dōrea>} ofGod, {τοῦ θεοῦ<ho theos>} and {καὶ<kai>} who {τίς<tis>} itis {ἐστιν<eimi>} that {ὁ<ho>} issaying {λέγων<legō>} toyou, {σοι·<y>} ‘Give {δός <didōmi>} me {μοι<egō>} adrink,’ {πεῖν,<pinō>} you {σὺ <sy>} wouldhaveasked {ἂν ᾔτησας<anaiteō>} him, {αὐτὸν<autos>} and {καὶ <kai>} hewouldhavegiven {ἔδωκεν ἄν<didōmian>} you {σοι<sy>} living {ζῶν.<zaō>} water.” {ὕδωρ<hydōr>}


4:11 - The {ἡ <ho>} woman {γυνή·<gynē>} said {λέγει<legō>} tohim, {αὐτῷ <autos>} “Sir, {κύριε,<kyrios>} youhave {ἔχεις,<echō>} nothing {οὔτε <oute>} todraw water {ἄντλημα <antlēma>} with, • and {καὶ<kai>} the {τὸ<ho>} well {φρέαρ <phrear>} is {ἐστὶν <eimi>} deep. {βαθύ·<bathys>} Where {πόθεν<po>} then • {οὖν <oun>} doyouget {ἔχεις<echō>} thatliving {τὸ ζῶν;<ho zaō>} water? {τὸ ὕδωρ<ho hydōr>}


4:12 - Are {εἶ<eimi>} you {σὺ<sy>} greater {μείζων<meizōn>} thanour {ἡμῶν <egō>} father {τοῦ πατρὸς<ho patēr>} Jacob? {Ἰακώβ,<Iakōb> {μὴ<mē>} He {ὃς <hos>} gave {ἔδωκεν <didōmi>} us {ἡμῖν<egō>} the {τὸ<ho>} well {φρέαρ,<phrear>} and {καὶ<kai>} drank {ἔπιεν<pinō>} from {ἐξ<ek>} it {αὐτοῦ<autos>} himself, {αὐτὸς <autos>} as {καὶ<kai>} didhis {αὐτοῦ<autos>} sons {οἱ υἱοὶ <hohuios>} and {καὶ <kai>} his {αὐτοῦ;<autos>} livestock.” {τὰ θρέμματα <ho thremma>}


4:13 - • {Ἀπεκρίθη<apokrinomai>} Jesus {Ἰησοῦς<Iēsous>} • {καὶ<kai>} said {εἶπεν <legō>} toher, {αὐτῇ·<autos>} “Everyone {πᾶς<pas>} who {ὁ<ho>} drinks {πίνων<pinō>} of {ἐκ<ek>} this {τούτου<houtos>} water {τοῦ ὕδατος<ho hydōr>} willbethirsty {διψήσει <dipsaō>} again, {πάλιν.<palin>}


4:14 - but {δ᾽<de>} whoever {ὃς ἂν<hos an>} drinks {πίῃ<pinō>} of {ἐκ<ek>} the {τοῦ<ho>} water {ὕδατος<hydōr>} that {οὗ<hos>} I {ἐγὼ<egō>} willgive {δώσω <didōmi>} him {αὐτῷ,<autos>} willnever {οὐ μὴ<ou mē>} bethirsty {διψήσει <dipsaō>} again. {εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα,<eis ho aiōn>} • {ἀλλὰ<alla>} The {τὸ<ho>} water {ὕδωρ<hydōr>} that {ὃ<hos>} Iwillgive {δώσω<didōmi>} him {αὐτῷ <autos>} willbecome {γενήσεται<ginomai>} in {ἐν<en>} him {αὐτῷ<autos>} aspring {πηγὴ<pēgē>} ofwater {ὕδατος<hydōr>} welling up {ἁλλομένου<hallomai>} to {εἰς<eis>} eternal {αἰώνιον.<aiōnios>} life.” {ζωὴν <zōē>}


4:15 - The {ἡ<ho>} woman {γυνή·<gynē>} said {Λέγει<legō>} to {πρὸς<pros>} him, {αὐτὸν <autos>} “Sir, {κύριε,<kyrios>} give {δός<didōmi>} me {μοι<egō>} this {τοῦτο <houtos>} water, {τὸ ὕδωρ<hohydōr>} so that {ἵνα<hina>} Iwillnot {μὴ<mē>} bethirsty {διψῶ <dipsaō>} or {μηδὲ<mēde>} havetocome {ἔρχωμαι <erchomai>} here {ἐνθάδε <enthade>} todraw {ἀντλεῖν.<antleō>} water.”




 

John 4:1-15 -


The world of sinners loved by God includes not just respectable insiders seeking truth (Nicodemus) but broken outsiders running from the truth (the Samaritan woman). None of us are beyond the need of God’s grace and none of us are beyond the reach of God’s grace. Jesus has come to seek and to save both the “found,” those who presume they already have a relationship with God, and the “lost,” those who realize they don’t.


This interchange between Jesus and the Samaritan woman shows us that eternal life isn’t just about our life in heaven when we die; it is also about the life of heaven “welling up” (v. 14) in us while we live. Jesus’ conversation is designed to help this woman see the realities of “heaven” despite the realities of her sin and shame, but he also intends for her discovery to affect her community and culture. The gospel is not ethereal or abstract; it concerns people and place. The woman was shocked that a Jewish man would speak openly to a Samaritan woman. Here Jesus confronts racism and sexism. He has come, as the old hymn says, to “make his blessings flow far as the curse is found.”
