4:27 - Just then {καὶ ἐπὶ τούτῳ<kai epi houtos>} his {αὐτοῦ<autos>} disciples {οἱ μαθηταὶ <ho mathētēs>} came back. {ἦλθον<erchomai>} • {καὶ<kai>} Theymarveled {ἐθαύμαζον <thaumazō>} that {ὅτι<hoti>} hewastalking {ἐλάλει· <laleō>} with {μετὰ<meta>} awoman, {γυναικὸς<gynē>} but {μέντοι<mentoi>} no one {οὐδεὶς<oudeis>} said, {εἶπεν·<legō>} “What {τί<tis>} doyouseek?” {ζητεῖς,<zēteō>} or, {ἢ<ē>} “Why {τί<tis>} areyoutalking {λαλεῖς<laleō>} with {μετ᾽<meta>} her?” {αὐτῆς;<autos>}


4:28 - So {οὖν<oun>} the {ἡ<ho>} woman {γυνὴ<gynē>} left {Ἀφῆκεν<aphiēmi>} her {αὐτῆς<autos>} water jar {τὴν ὑδρίαν<ho hydria>} and {καὶ<kai>} went away {ἀπῆλθεν<aperchomai>} into {εἰς<eis>} town {τὴν πόλιν<ho polis>} and {καὶ<kai>} said {λέγει<legō>} tothe {τοῖς<ho>} people, {ἀνθρώποις·<anthrōpos>}


4:29 - “Come, {δεῦτε,<deute>} see {ἴδετε<horaō>} aman {ἄνθρωπον<anthrōpos>} who {ὃς<hos>} told {εἶπέν<legō>} me {μοι<egō>} all {πάντα<pas>} thatIever {ὅσα<hosos>} did. {ἐποίησα·<poieō>} Canthis {οὗτός<houtos>} be {ἐστιν<eimi>} the {ὁ <ho>} Christ {χριστός;<Christos>}?” {μήτι<mēti>}


4:30 - Theywent {ἐξῆλθον<exerchomai>} out of {ἐκ<ek>} the {τῆς<ho>} town {πόλεως<polis>} and {καὶ<kai>} werecoming {ἤρχοντο<erchomai>} to {πρὸς <pros>} him. {αὐτόν. <autos>}


4:31 - Meanwhile {Ἐν τῷ μεταξὺ<en ho metaxy>} the {οἱ<ho>} disciples {μαθηταὶ <mathētēs>} wereurging {ἠρώτων<erōtaō>} him, {αὐτὸν<autos>} saying, {λέγοντες· <legō>} “Rabbi, {ῥαββεί,<rhabbei>} eat.” {φάγε.<esthiō>}


4:32 - But {δὲ<de>} he {ὁ<ho>} said {εἶπεν<legō>} tothem, {αὐτοῖς·<autos>} “I {ἐγὼ<egō>} have {ἔχω<echō>} food {βρῶσιν<brōsis>} toeat {φαγεῖν<esthiō>} that {ἣν<hos>} you {ὑμεῖς<sy>} donot {οὐκ<ou>} know {οἴδατε.<oida>} about.” •


4:33 - So {οὖν<oun>} the {οἱ<ho>} disciples {μαθηταὶ<mathētēs>} said {ἔλεγον <legō>} to {πρὸς<pros>} one another, {ἀλλήλους·<allēlōn>} “Hasanyone {τις <tis>} brought {ἤνεγκεν <pherō>} him {αὐτῷ<autos>} somethingtoeat {φαγεῖν;<esthiō> ?” {μή<mē>}


4:34 - Jesus {ὁ Ἰησοῦς·<ho Iēsous>} said {λέγει<legō>} tothem, {αὐτοῖς<autos>} “My {ἐμὸν<emos>} food {βρῶμά<brōma>} is {ἐστιν <eimi>} to {ἵνα<hina>} do {ποιήσω<poieō>} the {τὸ<ho>} will {θέλημα<thelēma>} of him who {τοῦ<ho>} sent {πέμψαντός<pempō>} me {με<egō>} and {καὶ<kai>} toaccomplish {τελειώσω <teleioō>} his {αὐτοῦ<autos>} work. {τὸ ἔργον.<ho ergon>}


4:35 - Do you {ὑμεῖς<sy>} not {οὐχ<ou>} say, {λέγετε<legō>} ‘ὅτι<hoti>} Thereare {ἐστιν<eimi>} yet {ἔτι<eti>} four months, {τετράμηνός<tetramēnos>} then {καὶ <kai>} comes {ἔρχεται;<erchomai>} the {ὁ<ho>} harvest’? {θερισμὸς<therismos>} Look, {ἰδοὺ<idou>} Itell {λέγω<legō>} you, {ὑμῖν·<sy>} lift up {ἐπάρατε<epairō>] your {ὑμῶν<sy>} eyes, {τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς<ho ophthalmos>} and {καὶ<kai>} see {θεάσασθε<theaomai>} that {ὅτι<hoti>} the {τὰς<ho>} fields {χώρας<chōra>} are {εἰσιν<eimi>} white {λευκαί<leukos>} for {πρὸς<pros>} harvest. {θερισμὸν.<therismos>}


4:36 - Already {ἤδη<ēdē>} the one who {ὁ <ho>} reaps {θερίζων<therizō>} isreceiving {λαμβάνει<lambanō>} wages {μισθὸν<misthos>} and {καὶ<kai>} gathering {συνάγει<synagō>} fruit {καρπὸν<karpos>} for {εἰς<eis>} eternal {αἰώνιον,<aiōnios>} life, {ζωὴν<zōē>} so that {ἵνα<hina>} sower {ὁ σπείρων<ho speirō>} and {καὶ<kai>} reaper {ὁ θερίζων.<ho therizō>} mayrejoice {χαίρῃ<chairō>} together. {ὁμοῦ<homou>}


4:37 - For {γὰρ<gar>} here {ἐν τούτῳ<en houtos>} the {ὁ<ho>} saying {λόγος <logos>} holds {ἐστὶν<eimi>} true, {ἀληθινός,<alēthinos‘>ὅτι<hoti>} One {ἄλλος <allos>} • {ἐστὶν<eimi>} sows {ὁ σπείρων<ho speirō>} and {καὶ<kai>} another {ἄλλος<allos>} reaps. {’ὁ θερίζων.<ho therizō>}


4:38 - I {ἐγὼ<egō>} sent {ἀπέστειλα<apostellō>} you {ὑμᾶς<sy>} toreap {θερίζειν <therizō>} that for which {ὃ<hos>} you {ὑμεῖς<sy>} didnot {οὐχ<ou>} labor. {κεκοπιάκατε·<kopiaō>} Others {ἄλλοι<allos>} havelabored, {κεκοπιάκασιν,<kopiaō>} and {καὶ<kai>} you {ὑμεῖς<sy>} haveentered {εἰσεληλύθατε.<eiserchomai>} into {εἰς <eis>} their {αὐτῶν<autos>} labor.” {τὸν κόπον<ho kopos>}






 

John 4:27-38 -


Nicodemus and the Samaritan woman were both part of the prepared harvest for which Jesus came. As disciples of Jesus, we follow him into a great grace story that has secured the salvation of men and women “from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages” (Rev. 7:9). All of history is bound up with God’s commitment to redeem his covenant family through the work of Jesus.
