4:39 - • {δὲ<de>} Many {πολλοὶ<polys>} Samaritans {τῶν Σαμαρειτῶν<ho Samareitēs>} from {ἐκ<ek>} that {ἐκείνης<ekeinos>} town {τῆς πόλεως<ho polis>} believed {ἐπίστευσαν<pisteuō>} in {εἰς<eis>} him {αὐτὸν<autos>} because of {διὰ<dia>} • {τὸν<ho>} • {λόγον <logos>} the {τῆς<ho>} woman’s {γυναικὸς<gynē>} testimony, {μαρτυρούσης<martyreō>} “ὅτι<hoti>} He → told {εἶπέν<legō>} me {μοι<egō>} all {πάντα<pas>} that {ἃ<hos>} I → ever • did.” {ἐποίησα.<poieō>}

4:40 - So {οὖν<oun>} when {ὡς<hōs>} the {οἱ<ho>} Samaritans {Σαμαρεῖται,<Samareitēs>} came {ἦλθον<erchomai>} to {πρὸς<pros>} him, {αὐτὸν<autos>} they → asked {ἠρώτων <erōtaō>} him {αὐτὸν<autos>} to → stay {μεῖναι<menō>} with {παρ᾽<para>} them, {αὐτοῖς.<autos>} and {καὶ<kai>} he → stayed {ἔμεινεν<menō>} there {ἐκεῖ<ekei>} two {δύο<dyo>} days. {ἡμέρας.<hēmera>}

4:41 - And {καὶ<kai>} many {πολλῷ<polys>} more {πλείους<pleiōn>} believed {ἐπίστευσαν<pisteuō>} because of {διὰ<dia>} his {αὐτοῦ,<autos>} word. {τὸν λόγον<ho logos>}

4:42 - They → said {ἔλεγον<legō>} to → the {τῇ<ho>} • {τε<te>} woman, {γυναικὶ <gynē>“ ὅτι<hoti>} It • is • no longer {οὐκέτι<ouketi>} because of {διὰ<dia>} what {τὴν<ho>} you {σὴν<sos>} said {λαλιὰν<lalia>} that • we → believe, {πιστεύομεν· <pisteuō>} for {γὰρ<gar>} we → have → heard {ἀκηκόαμεν<akouō>} for • ourselves, {αὐτοὶ<autos>} and {καὶ<kai>} we → know {οἴδαμεν<oida>} that {ὅτι <hoti>} this {οὗτός<houtos>} is {ἐστιν<eimi>} indeed {ἀληθῶς<alēthōs>} the {ὁ<ho>} Savior {σωτὴρ<sōtēr>} of → the {τοῦ<ho>} world.” {κόσμου.<kosmos>}

4:43 - After {Μετὰ<meta>} • {δὲ<de>} the {τὰς<ho>} two {δύο<dyo>} days {ἡμέρας <hēmera>} he → departed {ἐξῆλθεν<exerchomai>} • {ἐκεῖθεν<ekeithen>} for {εἰς<eis>} Galilee. {τὴν Γαλιλαίαν.<ho Galilaia>}

4:44 - (For {γὰρ<gar>} Jesus {Ἰησοῦς<Iēsous>} himself {αὐτὸς<autos>} had → testified {ἐμαρτύρησεν<martyreō>} that {ὅτι<hotia>} → prophet {προφήτης <prophētēs>} has {ἔχει.<echō>} no {οὐκ<ou>} honor {τιμὴν<timē>} in {ἐν<en>} his → own {ἰδίᾳ<idios>} hometown.) {τῇ πατρίδι<ho patris>}

John 4:39-45 -

The gospel comes to us in order that it might run through us. Having believed on Jesus, the Samaritan woman went back to her community to share the good news with her family and friends. In doing so, she gives us the paradigm of a good testimony. Jesus is the hero of her story. She drew attention to the One who exposed her sin and gave her life; and in doing so, she invited her friends to do the same. The gospel is personal, but it is not private.
