The Healing at the Pool on the Sabbath - {Interlinear <Greek>}

5:1 - After {Μετὰ<meta>} this {ταῦτα<houtos>} there → was {ἦν<eimi>} a → feast {ἑορτὴ<heortē>} of → the {τῶν<ho>} Jews, {Ἰουδαίων,<Ioudaios>} and {καὶ<kai>} Jesus {Ἰησοῦς<Iēsous>} went up {ἀνέβη<anabainō>} to {εἰς<eis>} Jerusalem. {Ἱεροσόλυμα.<Hierosolyma>}

5:2 - Now {δὲ<de>} there → is {ἔστιν<eimi>} in {ἐν<en>} Jerusalem {τοῖς Ἱεροσολύμοις <ho Hierosolyma>} by {ἐπὶ<epi>} the {τῇ<ho>} Sheep {προβατικῇ <probatikos>} Gate ← a → pool, {κολυμβήθρα,<kolymbēthra>} in → Aramaic {Ἑβραϊστὶ<Hebraisti>} called {ἡ ἐπιλεγομένη<ho epilegō>} Bethesda, {Βηθεσδά,<Bēthesda>} which • has {ἔχουσα.<echō>} five {πέντε<pente>} roofed → colonnades. {στοὰς<stoa>}

5:3 - In {ἐν<en>} these {ταύταις<houtos>} lay {κατέκειτο<katakeimai>} a → multitude {πλῆθος<plēthos>} of → invalids — {τῶν ἀσθενούντων,<ho astheneō>} blind, {τυφλῶν, <typhlos>} lame, {χωλῶν,<chōlos>} and • paralyzed. {ξηρῶν.<xēros>}

(5:4 - for an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool, and stirred the water: whoever stepped in first after the stirring of the water was healed of whatever disease he had)

5:5 - • {δέ<de>} One {τις<tis>} man {ἄνθρωπος<anthrōpos>} was {Ἦν<eimi>} there {ἐκεῖ<ekei>} who • had → been {ἔχων<echōan>} invalid {ἐν τῇ ἀσθενείᾳ αὐτοῦ. <en ho astheneia autos>} for → thirty-eight {τριάκοντα καὶ ὀκτὼ<triakonta kai oktō>} years. {ἔτη<etos>}

5:8 - Jesus {ὁ Ἰησοῦς·<ho Iēsous>} said {λέγει<legō>} to → him, {αὐτῷ<autos>} “Get up, {ἔγειρε,<egeirō>} take up {ἆρον<airō>} your {σου<sy>} bed, {τὸν κράβαττόν <ho krabattos>} and {καὶ<kai>} walk.” {περιπάτει.<peripateō>}

5:9 - And {καὶ<kai>} at once {εὐθέως<eutheōs>} the {ὁ<ho>} man {ἄνθρωπος <anthrōpos>} was {ἐγένετο<ginomai>} healed, {ὑγιὴς<hygiēs>} and {καὶ<kai>} he took up {ἦρεν<airō>} his {αὐτοῦ<autos>} bed {τὸν κράβαττον<ho krabattos>} and {καὶ<kai>} walked. {περιεπάτει·<peripateō>} Now {δὲ<de>} • {ἐν<en>} that {ἐκείνῃ<ekeinos>} day {τῇ ἡμέρᾳ.<ho hēmera>} was {ἦν<eimi>} the → Sabbath. {σάββατον<sabbaton>}

John 5:1-9 -

The further we move into John’s Gospel, the wider he draws open the curtains on Jesus’ identity and mission. His miracles grow bigger and his words grow bolder—all revealing Jesus to be the Messiah, the Son of God—even God the Son.

Isaiah envisioned the age of the Messiah in terms of a new exodus. The blind will see, the deaf will hear, the lame will leap, and the desert sand will become a pool of refreshing water (Isa. 35:1–10). The healing of the invalid by the pool of Bethesda is another declaration that the eschatological era of the Messiah has dawned—the “last days” of God’s final, earthly revelation of his grace have begun (Heb. 1:2; Acts 2:17). In Jesus, the kingdom of God has come near (Matt. 3:2; 4:17; Mark 1:15).
