The Book of John - Chapter 6:22-59 - (ESV)

I Am the Bread of Life- {Interlinear <Greek>}

6:22 - Onthe {Τῇ<ho>} next day {ἐπαύριον<epaurion>} the {ὁ<ho>} crowd {ὄχλος<ochlos>} that {ὁ<ho>} remained {ἑστηκὼς<histēmi>} on the other side of {πέραν<peran>} the {τῆς<ho>} sea {θαλάσσης<thalassa>} saw {εἶδον<horaō>} that {ὅτι<hoti>} therehadbeen {ἦν<eimi>} only {ἄλλο οὐκ εἰ μὴ<allos ou ei mē>} one {ἓν<heis>} boat {πλοιάριον <ploiarion>} there, {ἐκεῖ<ekei>} and {καὶ<kai>} that {ὅτι<hoti>} Jesus {ὁ Ἰησοῦς<ho Iēsous>} hadnot {οὐ<ou>} entered {συνεισῆλθεν <syneiserchomai>} the {τὸ<ho>} boat {πλοῖον<ploion>} withhis {αὐτοῦ<autos>} disciples, {τοῖς μαθηταῖς<ho mathētēs>} • {εἰς <eis>} but {ἀλλὰ<alla>} thathis {αὐτοῦ<autos>} disciples {οἱ μαθηταὶ<ho mathētēs>} had gone away {ἀπῆλθον· <aperchomai>} alone. {μόνοι<monos>}

6:23 - Other {ἄλλα<allos>} boats {πλοῖα<ploion>} from {ἐκ<ek>} Tiberias {Τιβεριάδος<Tiberias>} came {ἦλθεν<erchomai>} near {ἐγγὺς<engys>} the {τοῦ<ho>} place {τόπου<topos>} where {ὅπου<hopou>} theyhadeaten {ἔφαγον <esthiō>} the {τὸν<ho>} bread {ἄρτον<artos>} afterthe {τοῦ<ho>} Lord {κυρίου.<kyrios>} hadgiven thanks. {εὐχαριστήσαντος<eucharisteō>}

6:24 - So {οὖν<oun>} when {ὅτε<hote>} the {ὁ<ho>} crowd {ὄχλος<ochlos>} saw {εἶδεν<horaō>} that {ὅτι<hoti>} Jesus {Ἰησοῦς<Iēsous>} was {ἔστιν<eimi>} not {οὐκ <ou>} there, {ἐ κεῖ<ekei>} nor {οὐδὲ<oude>} his {αὐτοῦ,<autos>} disciples, {οἱ μαθηταὶ<ho mathētēs>} theythemselves {αὐτοὶ<autos>} got {ἐνέβησαν <embainō>} into {εἰς<eis>} the {τὰ<ho>} boats {πλοιάρια<ploiarion>} and {καὶ<kai>} went {ἦλθον<erchomai>} to {εἰς<eis>} Capernaum, {Καφαρναοὺμ<Kapharnaoum>} seeking {ζητοῦντες<zēteō>} Jesus. {τὸν Ἰησοῦν,<ho Iēsous>}

6:25 - • {καὶ<kai>} Whentheyfound {εὑρόντες<heuriskō>} him {αὐτὸν<autos>} on the other side of {πέραν<peran>} the {τῆς<ho>} sea, {θαλάσσης<thalassa>} theysaid {εἶπον<legō>} tohim, {αὐτῷ·<autos>} “Rabbi, {ῥαββεί,<rhabbei>} when {πότε<pote>} didyoucome {γέγονας;<ginomai>} here?” {ὧδε<hōde>}

6:26 - Jesus {ὁ Ἰησοῦς<ho Iēsous>} answered {Ἀπεκρίθη<apokrinomai>} them, {αὐτοῖς<autos>} • {καὶ<kai>} • {εἶπεν·<legō>} “Truly, {ἀμὴν<amēn>} truly, {ἀμὴν <amēn>} Isay {λέγω<egō>} to you, {ὑμῖν·<sy>} youareseeking {ζητεῖτέ <zēteō>} me, {με<egō>} not {οὐχ<ou>} because {ὅτι<hoti>} you saw {εἴδετε <horaō>} signs, {σημεῖα,<sēmeion>} but {ἀλλ᾽<alla>} because {ὅτι<hoti>} youate {ἐφάγετε<esthiō>} your fill {ἐχορτάσθητε.<chortazō>} of {ἐκ<ek>} the {τῶν<ho>} loaves. {ἄρτων<artos>} • {καὶ<kai>}

6:27 - Donot {μὴ<mē>} work {ἐργάζεσθε<ergazomai>} forthe {τὴν<ho>} food {βρῶσιν <brōsis>} that {τὴν<ho>} perishes, {ἀπολλυμένην<apollymi>} but {ἀλλὰ<alla>} forthe {τὴν <ho>} food {βρῶσιν<brōsis>} that {τὴν<ho>} endures {μένουσαν <menō>} to {εἰς<eis>} eternal {αἰώνιον<aiōnios>} life, {ζωὴν<zōē>} which {ἣν<hos>} the {ὁ<ho>} Son {υἱὸς<huios>} ofMan {τοῦ ἀνθρώπου<ho anthrōpos>} willgive {δώσει·<didōmi>} toyou. {ὑμῖν<sy>} For {γὰρ<gar>} on him {τοῦτον <houtos>} God {ὁ θεός.<ho theos>} the {ὁ <ho>} Father {πατὴρ<patēr>} hassethisseal.” {ἐσφράγισεν<sphragizō>}

6:28 - Then {οὖν<oun>} theysaid {εἶπον<legō>} to {πρὸς<pros>} him, {αὐτόν· <autos>} “What {τί<tis>} mustwedo, {ποιῶμεν<poieō>} to {ἵνα<hina>} bedoing {ἐργαζώμεθα<ergazomai>} the {τὰ<ho>} works {ἔργα<ergon>} ofGod?” {τοῦ θεοῦ;<ho theos>}

6:29 - Jesus {Ἰησοῦς<Iēsous>} answered {Ἀπεκρίθη<apokrinomai>} • {καὶ<kai>} • {εἶπεν<legō>} them, {αὐτοῖς·<autos>} “This {τοῦτό<houtos>} is { ἐστιν<eimi>} the {τὸ<ho>} work {ἔργον<ergon>} ofGod, {τοῦ θεοῦ<ho theos>} that {ἵνα<hina>} youbelieve {πιστεύητε <pisteuō>} in {εἰς<eis>} himwhom {ὃν<hos>} he {ἐκεῖνος.<ekeinos>} hassent.” {ἀπέστειλεν<apostellō>}

6:30 - So {οὖν<oun>} theysaid {Εἶπον<legō>} tohim, {αὐτῷ·<autos>} “Then {οὖν <oun>} what {τί<tis>} sign {σημεῖον<sēmeion>} doyou {σὺ<sy>} do, {ποιεῖς <poieō>} that {ἵνα<hina>} wemaysee {ἴδωμεν<horaō>} and {καὶ<kai>} believe {πιστεύσωμέν <pisteuō>} you? {σοι;<sy>} What {τί<tis>} work {ἐργάζῃ;<ergazomai>} doyouperform?

6:31 - Our {ἡμῶν<egō>} fathers {οἱ<πατέρες<ho patēr>} ate {ἔφαγον<esthiō>} the {τὸ <ho>} manna {μάννα<manna>} in {ἐν<en>} the {τῇ<ho>} wilderness; {ἐρήμῳ <erēmos>} as {καθώς<kathōs>} itis {ἐστιν<eimi>} written, {γεγραμμένον·<graphō>} ‘Hegave {ἔδωκεν<didōmi>} them {αὐτοῖς<autos>} bread {ἄρτον<artos>} from {ἐκ<ek>} heaven {τοῦ <οὐρανοῦ<ho ouranos>} toeat.’” {φαγεῖν.<esthiō>}

6:32 - Jesus {ὁ Ἰησοῦς·<ho Iēsous>} then {οὖν<oun>} said {Εἶπεν<legō>} tothem, {αὐτοῖς <autos>} “Truly, {ἀμὴν<amēn>} truly, {ἀμὴν<amēn>} Isay {λέγω <legō>} toyou, {ὑμῖν·<sy>} itwasnot {οὐ<ou>} Moses {Μωϋσῆς <Mōusēs>} whogave {δέδωκεν<didōmi>} you {ὑμῖν<sy>} the {τὸν<ho>} bread {ἄρτον<artos>} from {ἐκ<ek>} heaven, {τοῦ οὐρανοῦ,<ho ouranos>} but {ἀλλ᾽<alla>} my {μου<egō>} Father {ὁ πατήρ<ho patēr>} gives {δίδωσιν <didōmi>} you {ὑμῖν<sy>} the {τὸν<ho>} true {τὸν ἀληθινόν.<ho alēthinos>} bread {ἄρτον <artos>} from {ἐκ<ek>} heaven. {τοῦ οὐρανοῦ<ho ouranos>}

6:33 - For {γὰρ<gar>} the {ὁ<ho>} bread {ἄρτος<artos>} ofGod {τοῦ θεοῦ<ho theos>} is {ἐστιν<eimi>} he who {ὁ<ho>} comes down {καταβαίνων<katabainō>} from {ἐκ<ek>} heaven {τοῦ οὐρανοῦ<ho ouranos>} and {καὶ<kai>} gives {διδοὺς <didōmi>} life {ζωὴν<zōē>} tothe {τῷ<ho>} world.” {κόσμῳ.<kosmos>}

6:34 - Theysaid {Εἶπον<legō>} • {οὖν<oun>} to {πρὸς<pros>} him, {αὐτόν· <autos>} “Sir, {κύριε,<kyrios>} give {δὸς<didōmi>} us {ἡμῖν<egō>} this {τοῦτον.<houtos>} bread {τὸν ἄρτον<ho artos>} always.” {πάντοτε<pantote>}

6:35 - Jesus {ὁ Ἰησοῦς·<ho Iēsous>} said {Εἶπεν<legō>} tothem, {αὐτοῖς<autos>} “I {ἐγώ<egō>} am {εἰμι<eimi>} the {ὁ<ho>} bread {ἄρτος<artos>} oflife; {τῆς ζωῆς·<ho zōē>} whoever {ὁ<ho>} comes {ἐρχόμενος<erchomai>} to {πρὸς<pros>} me {ἐμὲ<egō>} shallnot {οὐ μὴ<ou mē>} hunger, {πεινάσῃ,<peinaō>} and {καὶ<kai>} whoever {ὁho>} believes {πιστεύων<pisteuō>} in {εἰς<eis>} me {ἐμὲ <egō>} shallnever {οὐ μὴ πώποτε.<ou mē pōpote>} thirst. {διψήσει<dipsaō>}

6:36 - But {ἀλλ᾽<alla>} Isaid {εἶπον<legō>} toyou {ὑμῖν<sy>} that {ὅτι<hoti>} • {καὶ <kai>} youhaveseen {ἑωράκατέ<horaō>} me {με<egō>} and yet {καὶ <kai>} donot {οὐ<ou>} believe. {πιστεύετε.<pisteuō>}

6:37 - All {πᾶν<pas>} that {ὃ<hos>} the {ὁ<ho>} Father {πατὴρ<patēr>} gives {δίδωσίν <didōmi>} me {μοι<egō>} willcome {ἥξει,<hēkō>} to {πρὸς<pros>} me, {ἐμὲ<egō>} and {καὶ<kai>} whoever {τὸν<ho>} comes {ἐρχόμενον<erchomai>} to {πρὸς<pros>} me {ἐμὲ <egō>} Iwillnever {οὐ μὴ<ou mē>} cast {ἐκβάλω <ekballō>} out. {ἔξω,<exō>}

6:38 - For {ὅτι<hoti>} I have come down {καταβέβηκα<katabainō>} from {ἀπὸ <apo>} heaven, {τοῦ οὐρανοῦ<ho ouranos>} not {οὐχ<ou>} to {ἵνα<hina>} do {ποιῶ <poieō>} my {τὸ ἐμὸν<ho emos>} ownwill {τὸ θέλημα<ho thelēma>} but {ἀλλὰ <alla>} the {τὸ<ho>} will {θέλημα<thelēma>} of him who {τοῦ<ho>} sent {πέμψαντός <pempō>} me. {με.<egō>}

6:39 - And {δέ<de>} this {τοῦτο<houtos>} is {ἐστιν<eimi>} the {τὸ<ho>} will {θέλημα <thelēma>} of him who {τοῦ<ho>} sent {πέμψαντός<pempō>} me {με,<egō>} that {ἵνα<hina>} Ishouldlose {ἀπολέσω<apollymi>} nothing {μὴ<mē>} of {ἐξ<ek>} all {πᾶν<pas>} that {ὃ<hos>} hehasgiven {δέδωκέν<didōmi>} me, {μοι<egō>} • {αὐτοῦ,<autos>} but {ἀλλὰ<alla>} raiseit {αὐτὸ<autos>} up {ἀναστήσω<anistēmi>} onthe {τῇ <ho>} last {ἐσχάτῃ<eschatos>} day. {ἡμέρᾳ.<hēmera>}

6:40 - For {γάρ<gar>} this {τοῦτο<houtos>} is {ἐστιν<eimi>} the {τὸ<ho>} will {θέλημα <thelēma>} ofmy {μου,<egō>} Father, {τοῦ πατρός<ho patēr>} that {ἵνα<hina>} everyone {πᾶς<pas>} who {ὁ<ho>} looks {θεωρῶν<theōreō>} onthe {τὸν<ho>} Son {υἱὸν<huios>} and {καὶ<kai>} believes {πιστεύων<pisteuō>} in {εἰς<eis>} him {αὐτὸν<autos>} shouldhave {ἔχῃ<echō>} eternal {αἰώνιον,<aiōnios>} life, {ζωὴν <zōē>} and {καὶ<kai>} I {ἐγὼ<egō>} will raise {ἀναστήσω<anistēmi>} him {αὐτὸν <autos>} uponthe {τῇ<ho>} last {ἐσχάτῃ<eschatos>} day.” {ἡμέρᾳ.<hēmera>}

6:41 - So {οὖν<oun>} the {οἱ<ho>} Jews {Ἰουδαῖοι<Ioudaios>} grumbled {Ἐγόγγυζον <gongyzō>} about {περὶ<peri>} him, {αὐτοῦ<autos>} because {ὅτι<hoti>} hesaid, {εἶπεν· <legō>} “I {ἐγώ<egō>} am {εἰμι<eimi>} the {ὁ<ho>} bread {ἄρτος <artos>} that {ὁ<ho>} came down {καταβὰς<katabainō>} from {ἐκ<ek>} heaven.” {τοῦ οὐρανοῦ·<ho ouranos>}

6:43 - Jesus {Ἰησοῦς<Iēsous>} answered {Ἀπεκρίθη<apokrinomai>} • {καὶ<kai>} • {εἶπεν <legō>} them, {αὐτοῖς·<autos>} “Donot {μὴ<mē>} grumble {γογγύζετε <gongyzō>} among {μετ᾽<meta>} yourselves. {ἀλλήλων.<allēlōn>}

6:45 - Itis {ἔστιν<eimi>} written {γεγραμμένον<graphō>} in {ἐν<en>} the {τοῖς <ho>} Prophets, {προφήταις·<prophētēs‘>} And {καὶ<kai>} theywillall {πάντες <pas>} be {ἔσονται<eimi>} taught {διδακτοὶ<didaktos>} byGod.’ {θεοῦ.<theos>} Everyone {πᾶς<pas>} who {ὁ<ho>} hasheard {ἀκούσας<akouō>} and {καὶ<kai>} learned {μαθὼν<manthanō>} from {παρὰ<para>} the {τοῦ<ho>} Father {πατρὸς <patēr>} comes {ἔρχεται <erchomai>} to {πρὸς<pros>} me — {ἐμέ·<egō>}

6:46 - not {οὐχ<ou>} that {ὅτι<hoti>} anyone {τις<tis>} hasseen {ἑώρακέν <horaō>} the {τὸν<ho>} Father {πατέρα<patēr>} except {εἰ μὴ<ei mē>} he who {ὁ <ho>} is {ὢν<eimi>} from {παρὰ<para>} God; {τοῦ θεοῦ,<ho theos>} he {οὗτος <houtos>} hasseen {ἑώρακεν <horaō>} the {τὸν<ho>} Father. {πατέρα.<patēr>}

6:47 - Truly, {Ἀμὴν<amēn>} truly, {ἀμὴν<amēn>} Isay {λέγω<legō>} toyou, {ὑμῖν·<sy>} whoever {ὁ<ho>} believes {πιστεύων<pisteuō>} has {ἔχει<echō>} eternal {αἰώνιον. <aiōnios>} life. {ζωὴν<zōē>}

6:48 - I {ἐγώ<egō>} am {εἰμι<eimi>} the {ὁ<ho>} bread {ἄρτος<artos>} oflife. {τῆς ζωῆς.<ho zōē>}

6:50 - This {οὗτός<houtos>} is {ἐστιν<eimi>} the {ὁ<ho>} bread {ἄρτος<artos>} that {ὁ<ho>} comes down {καταβαίνων,<katabainō>} from {ἐκ<ek>} heaven, {τοῦ οὐρανοῦ <ho ouranos>} so that {ἵνα<hina>} one {τις<tis>} mayeat {φάγῃ<esthiō>} of {ἐξ<ek>} it {αὐτοῦ<autos>} and {καὶ<kai>} not {μὴ<mē>} die. {ἀποθάνῃ.<apothnēskō>}

6:51 - I {Ἐγώ<egō>} am {εἰμι<eimi>} the {ὁ<ho>} living {ὁ ζῶν<ho zaō>} bread {ἄρτος <artos>} that {ὁ<ho>} came down {καταβάς·<katabainō>] from {ἐκ<ek>} heaven. {τοῦ οὐρανοῦ<ho ouranos>} If {ἐάν<ean>} anyone {τις<tis>} eats {φάγῃ <esthiō>} of {ἐκ<ek>} this {τούτου<houtos>} bread, {τοῦ ἄρτου,<ho artos>} hewilllive {ζήσεται<zaō>} forever. {εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα.<eis ho aiōn>} And {καὶ<kai>} the {ὁ <ho>} bread {ἄρτος<artos>} • {δὲ<de>} that {ὃν<hos>} I {ἐγὼ egō>} willgive {δώσω <didōmi>} for {ὑπὲρ<hyper>} the {τῆς<ho>} life {ζωῆς.<zōē>} ofthe {τοῦ <ho>} world {κόσμου<kosmos>} is {ἐστὶν<eimi>} my {μου<egō>} flesh.” {ἡ σάρξ<ho sarx>}

6:52 - The {οἱ<ho>} Jews {Ἰουδαῖοι <Ioudaios>} then {οὖν<oun>} disputed {Ἐμάχοντο <machomai>} among {πρὸς<pros>} themselves, {ἀλλήλους <allēlōn>} saying, {λέγοντες· <legō>} “How {πῶς<pōs>} can {δύναται<dynamai>} this {οὗτος <houtos>} mangive {δοῦναι<didōmi>} us {ἡμῖν<egō>} hisflesh {τὴν σάρκα<ho sarx>} toeat?” {φαγεῖν; <esthiō>}

6:53 - So {οὖν<oun>} Jesus {ὁ Ἰησοῦς·<ho Iēsous>} said {Εἶπεν<legō>} tothem, {αὐτοῖς <autos>} “Truly, {ἀμὴν amēn>} truly, {ἀμὴν<amēn>} Isay {λέγω<legō>} toyou, {ὑμῖν· <sy>} unless {ἐὰν μὴ<ean mē>} youeat {φάγητε<esthiō>} the {τὴν <ho>} flesh {σάρκα<sarx>} ofthe {τοῦ<ho>} Son {υἱοῦ<huios>} ofMan {τοῦ ἀνθρώπου<ho anthrōpos>} and {καὶ<kai>} drink {πίητε<pinō>} his {αὐτοῦ<autos>} blood, {τὸ αἷμα,<ho haima>} youhave {ἔχετε<echō>} no {οὐκ<ou>} life {ζωὴν <zōē>} in {ἐν<en>} you. {ἑαυτοῖς.<heautou>}

6:55 - For {γὰρ<gar>} my {μου<egō> flesh {ἡ σάρξ<ho sarx>} is {ἐστιν<eimi>} true {ἀληθής <alēthēs>} food, {βρῶσις,<brōsis>} and {καὶ<kai>} my {μου<egō>} blood {τὸ αἷμά <ho haima>} is {ἐστιν<eimi>} true {ἀληθής<alēthēs>} drink. {πόσις.<posis>}

6:57 - As {καθὼς<kathōs>} the {ὁ<ho>} living {ζῶν<zaō>} Father {πατὴρ<patēr>} sent {ἀπέστειλέν<apostellō>} me, {με<egō>} and I {κἀγὼ<kagō>} live {ζῶ<zaō>} because of {διὰ<dia>} the {τὸν<ho>} Father, {πατέρα,<patēr>} so {καὶ<kai>} whoever {ὁ<ho>} feeds on {τρώγων<trōgō>} me, {με<egō>} he also {κἀκεῖνος <kakeinos>} willlive {ζήσει<zaō>} because of {δι᾽<dia>} me. {ἐμέ.<egō>}

Neither manna on the journey to the Promised Land in Moses’ time (Ex. 16:13–18) nor barley loaves in the Promised Land in Jesus’ time could satisfy the core hunger he came to satisfy. Too readily, we seek satisfaction from the bread of this world. When huge crowds followed him to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, Jesus seized the moment to expose their self-centered motivation and to reveal more of his God-glorifying vocation.

Jesus provides a bread that leads to eternal life. But Jesus doesn’t just provide this bread; he is this bread—the Bread of Life. This is the first of several “I am” statements by Jesus throughout John’s Gospel—each of which are reminiscent of the God who revealed his name to Moses as “I AM” (Ex. 3:14).

How can we acquire this life-giving bread? The only “work” that guarantees the possession of this redemptive manna is to believe in Jesus (John 6:29). The gospel sabotages any notion of legalism or performance-based acceptability with God. The only thing we bring to Jesus is our need. All we offer is the admission that we have nothing to offer.

Tragically, just as God’s people grumbled over the provision of the first manna, so now, as he offered the eschatological bread from heaven, some in the crowd did the same (Num. 11:1–15; John 6:43). Oh, the patience and forbearance of our God!
