6:23 - Other {ἄλλα<allos>} boats {πλοῖα<ploion>} from {ἐκ<ek>} Tiberias {Τιβεριάδος<Tiberias>} came {ἦλθεν<erchomai>} near {ἐγγὺς<engys>} the {τοῦ<ho>} place {τόπου<topos>} where {ὅπου<hopou>} they → had → eaten {ἔφαγον <esthiō>} the {τὸν<ho>} bread {ἄρτον<artos>} after → the {τοῦ<ho>} Lord {κυρίου.<kyrios>} had → given → thanks. {εὐχαριστήσαντος<eucharisteō>}

6:24 - So {οὖν<oun>} when {ὅτε<hote>} the {ὁ<ho>} crowd {ὄχλος<ochlos>} saw {εἶδεν<horaō>} that {ὅτι<hoti>} Jesus {Ἰησοῦς<Iēsous>} was {ἔστιν<eimi>} not {οὐκ <ou>} there, {ἐ κεῖ<ekei>} nor {οὐδὲ<oude>} his {αὐτοῦ,<autos>} disciples, {οἱ μαθηταὶ<ho mathētēs>} they → themselves {αὐτοὶ<autos>} got {ἐνέβησαν <embainō>} into {εἰς<eis>} the {τὰ<ho>} boats {πλοιάρια<ploiarion>} and {καὶ<kai>} went {ἦλθον<erchomai>} to {εἰς<eis>} Capernaum, {Καφαρναοὺμ<Kapharnaoum>} seeking {ζητοῦντες<zēteō>} Jesus. {τὸν Ἰησοῦν,<ho Iēsous>}

6:25 - • {καὶ<kai>} When → they → found {εὑρόντες<heuriskō>} him {αὐτὸν<autos>} on the other side of {πέραν<peran>} the {τῆς<ho>} sea, {θαλάσσης<thalassa>} they → said {εἶπον<legō>} to → him, {αὐτῷ·<autos>} “Rabbi, {ῥαββεί,<rhabbei>} when {πότε<pote>} did → you → come {γέγονας;<ginomai>} here?” {ὧδε<hōde>}

6:26 - Jesus {ὁ Ἰησοῦς<ho Iēsous>} answered {Ἀπεκρίθη<apokrinomai>} them, {αὐτοῖς<autos>} • {καὶ<kai>} • {εἶπεν·<legō>} “Truly, {ἀμὴν<amēn>} truly, {ἀμὴν <amēn>} I → say {λέγω<egō>} to → you, {ὑμῖν·<sy>} you → are → seeking {ζητεῖτέ <zēteō>} me, {με<egō>} not {οὐχ<ou>} because {ὅτι<hoti>} you → saw {εἴδετε <horaō>} signs, {σημεῖα,<sēmeion>} but {ἀλλ᾽<alla>} because {ὅτι<hoti>} you → ate {ἐφάγετε<esthiō>} your • fill {ἐχορτάσθητε.<chortazō>} of {ἐκ<ek>} the {τῶν<ho>} loaves. {ἄρτων<artos>} • {καὶ<kai>}

6:27 - Do → not {μὴ<mē>} work {ἐργάζεσθε<ergazomai>} for • the {τὴν<ho>} food {βρῶσιν <brōsis>} that {τὴν<ho>} perishes, {ἀπολλυμένην<apollymi>} but {ἀλλὰ<alla>} for • the {τὴν <ho>} food {βρῶσιν<brōsis>} that {τὴν<ho>} endures {μένουσαν <menō>} to {εἰς<eis>} eternal {αἰώνιον<aiōnios>} life, {ζωὴν<zōē>} which {ἣν<hos>} the {ὁ<ho>} Son {υἱὸς<huios>} of → Man {τοῦ ἀνθρώπου<ho anthrōpos>} will → give {δώσει·<didōmi>} to → you. {ὑμῖν<sy>} For {γὰρ<gar>} on • him {τοῦτον <houtos>} God {ὁ θεός.<ho theos>} the {ὁ <ho>} Father {πατὴρ<patēr>} has → set → his → seal.” {ἐσφράγισεν<sphragizō>}

6:28 - Then {οὖν<oun>} they → said {εἶπον<legō>} to {πρὸς<pros>} him, {αὐτόν· <autos>} “What {τί<tis>} must → we → do, {ποιῶμεν<poieō>} to {ἵνα<hina>} be → doing {ἐργαζώμεθα<ergazomai>} the {τὰ<ho>} works {ἔργα<ergon>} of → God?” {τοῦ θεοῦ;<ho theos>}

6:29 - Jesus {Ἰησοῦς<Iēsous>} answered {Ἀπεκρίθη<apokrinomai>} • {καὶ<kai>} • {εἶπεν<legō>} them, {αὐτοῖς·<autos>} “This {τοῦτό<houtos>} is { ἐστιν<eimi>} the {τὸ<ho>} work {ἔργον<ergon>} of → God, {τοῦ θεοῦ<ho theos>} that {ἵνα<hina>} you → believe {πιστεύητε <pisteuō>} in {εἰς<eis>} him → whom {ὃν<hos>} he {ἐκεῖνος.<ekeinos>} has → sent.” {ἀπέστειλεν<apostellō>}

6:30 - So {οὖν<oun>} they → said {Εἶπον<legō>} to → him, {αὐτῷ·<autos>} “Then {οὖν <oun>} what {τί<tis>} sign {σημεῖον<sēmeion>} do → you {σὺ<sy>} do, {ποιεῖς <poieō>} that {ἵνα<hina>} we → may → see {ἴδωμεν<horaō>} and {καὶ<kai>} believe {πιστεύσωμέν <pisteuō>} you? {σοι;<sy>} What {τί<tis>} work {ἐργάζῃ;<ergazomai>} do ← you ← perform? ←

6:31 - Our {ἡμῶν<egō>} fathers {οἱ<πατέρες<ho patēr>} ate {ἔφαγον<esthiō>} the {τὸ <ho>} manna {μάννα<manna>} in {ἐν<en>} the {τῇ<ho>} wilderness; {ἐρήμῳ <erēmos>} as {καθώς<kathōs>} it → is {ἐστιν<eimi>} written, {γεγραμμένον·<graphō>} ‘He → gave {ἔδωκεν<didōmi>} them {αὐτοῖς<autos>} bread {ἄρτον<artos>} from {ἐκ<ek>} heaven {τοῦ <οὐρανοῦ<ho ouranos>} to → eat.’” {φαγεῖν.<esthiō>}

6:32 - Jesus {ὁ Ἰησοῦς·<ho Iēsous>} then {οὖν<oun>} said {Εἶπεν<legō>} to → them, {αὐτοῖς <autos>} “Truly, {ἀμὴν<amēn>} truly, {ἀμὴν<amēn>} I → say {λέγω <legō>} to → you, {ὑμῖν·<sy>} it • was • not {οὐ<ou>} Moses {Μωϋσῆς <Mōusēs>} who • gave {δέδωκεν<didōmi>} you {ὑμῖν<sy>} the {τὸν<ho>} bread {ἄρτον<artos>} from {ἐκ<ek>} heaven, {τοῦ οὐρανοῦ,<ho ouranos>} but {ἀλλ᾽<alla>} my {μου<egō>} Father {ὁ πατήρ<ho patēr>} gives {δίδωσιν <didōmi>} you {ὑμῖν<sy>} the {τὸν<ho>} true {τὸν ἀληθινόν.<ho alēthinos>} bread {ἄρτον <artos>} from {ἐκ<ek>} heaven. {τοῦ οὐρανοῦ<ho ouranos>}

6:33 - For {γὰρ<gar>} the {ὁ<ho>} bread {ἄρτος<artos>} of → God {τοῦ θεοῦ<ho theos>} is {ἐστιν<eimi>} he who {ὁ<ho>} comes down {καταβαίνων<katabainō>} from {ἐκ<ek>} heaven {τοῦ οὐρανοῦ<ho ouranos>} and {καὶ<kai>} gives {διδοὺς <didōmi>} life {ζωὴν<zōē>} to → the {τῷ<ho>} world.” {κόσμῳ.<kosmos>}

6:34 - They → said {Εἶπον<legō>} • {οὖν<oun>} to {πρὸς<pros>} him, {αὐτόν· <autos>} “Sir, {κύριε,<kyrios>} give {δὸς<didōmi>} us {ἡμῖν<egō>} this {τοῦτον.<houtos>} bread {τὸν ἄρτον<ho artos>} always.” {πάντοτε<pantote>}

6:35 - Jesus {ὁ Ἰησοῦς·<ho Iēsous>} said {Εἶπεν<legō>} to → them, {αὐτοῖς<autos>} “I {ἐγώ<egō>} am {εἰμι<eimi>} the {ὁ<ho>} bread {ἄρτος<artos>} of → life; {τῆς ζωῆς·<ho zōē>} whoever {ὁ<ho>} comes {ἐρχόμενος<erchomai>} to {πρὸς<pros>} me {ἐμὲ<egō>} shall → not {οὐ μὴ<ou mē>} hunger, {πεινάσῃ,<peinaō>} and {καὶ<kai>} whoever {ὁho>} believes {πιστεύων<pisteuō>} in {εἰς<eis>} me {ἐμὲ <egō>} shall → never {οὐ μὴ πώποτε.<ou mē pōpote>} thirst. {διψήσει<dipsaō>}

6:36 - But {ἀλλ᾽<alla>} I → said {εἶπον<legō>} to → you {ὑμῖν<sy>} that {ὅτι<hoti>} • {καὶ <kai>} you → have → seen {ἑωράκατέ<horaō>} me {με<egō>} and yet {καὶ <kai>} do → not {οὐ<ou>} believe. {πιστεύετε.<pisteuō>}

6:37 - All {πᾶν<pas>} that {ὃ<hos>} the {ὁ<ho>} Father {πατὴρ<patēr>} gives {δίδωσίν <didōmi>} me {μοι<egō>} will → come {ἥξει,<hēkō>} to {πρὸς<pros>} me, {ἐμὲ<egō>} and {καὶ<kai>} whoever {τὸν<ho>} comes {ἐρχόμενον<erchomai>} to {πρὸς<pros>} me {ἐμὲ <egō>} I → will → never {οὐ μὴ<ou mē>} cast {ἐκβάλω <ekballō>} out. {ἔξω,<exō>}

6:38 - For {ὅτι<hoti>} I have come down {καταβέβηκα<katabainō>} from {ἀπὸ <apo>} heaven, {τοῦ οὐρανοῦ<ho ouranos>} not {οὐχ<ou>} to {ἵνα<hina>} do {ποιῶ <poieō>} my {τὸ ἐμὸν<ho emos>} own ← will {τὸ θέλημα<ho thelēma>} but {ἀλλὰ <alla>} the {τὸ<ho>} will {θέλημα<thelēma>} of him who {τοῦ<ho>} sent {πέμψαντός <pempō>} me. {με.<egō>}

6:39 - And {δέ<de>} this {τοῦτο<houtos>} is {ἐστιν<eimi>} the {τὸ<ho>} will {θέλημα <thelēma>} of him who {τοῦ<ho>} sent {πέμψαντός<pempō>} me {με,<egō>} that {ἵνα<hina>} I → should → lose {ἀπολέσω<apollymi>} nothing {μὴ<mē>} of {ἐξ<ek>} all {πᾶν<pas>} that {ὃ<hos>} he → has → given {δέδωκέν<didōmi>} me, {μοι<egō>} • {αὐτοῦ,<autos>} but {ἀλλὰ<alla>} raise → it {αὐτὸ<autos>} up {ἀναστήσω<anistēmi>} on → the {τῇ <ho>} last {ἐσχάτῃ<eschatos>} day. {ἡμέρᾳ.<hēmera>}

6:40 - For {γάρ<gar>} this {τοῦτο<houtos>} is {ἐστιν<eimi>} the {τὸ<ho>} will {θέλημα <thelēma>} of → my {μου,<egō>} Father, {τοῦ πατρός<ho patēr>} that {ἵνα<hina>} everyone {πᾶς<pas>} who {ὁ<ho>} looks {θεωρῶν<theōreō>} on ← the {τὸν<ho>} Son {υἱὸν<huios>} and {καὶ<kai>} believes {πιστεύων<pisteuō>} in {εἰς<eis>} him {αὐτὸν<autos>} should → have {ἔχῃ<echō>} eternal {αἰώνιον,<aiōnios>} life, {ζωὴν <zōē>} and {καὶ<kai>} I {ἐγὼ<egō>} will raise {ἀναστήσω<anistēmi>} him {αὐτὸν <autos>} up ← on → the {τῇ<ho>} last {ἐσχάτῃ<eschatos>} day.” {ἡμέρᾳ.<hēmera>}

6:41 - So {οὖν<oun>} the {οἱ<ho>} Jews {Ἰουδαῖοι<Ioudaios>} grumbled {Ἐγόγγυζον <gongyzō>} about {περὶ<peri>} him, {αὐτοῦ<autos>} because {ὅτι<hoti>} he → said, {εἶπεν· <legō>} “I {ἐγώ<egō>} am {εἰμι<eimi>} the {ὁ<ho>} bread {ἄρτος <artos>} that {ὁ<ho>} came down {καταβὰς<katabainō>} from {ἐκ<ek>} heaven.” {τοῦ οὐρανοῦ·<ho ouranos>}

6:42 - • {καὶ<kai>} They → said, {ἔλεγον·<legō>} “Is {ἐστιν<eimi>} not {οὐχ<ou>} this {οὗτός <houtos>} Jesus, {Ἰησοῦς<Iēsous>} the {ὁ<ho>} son {υἱὸς<huios>} of → Joseph, {Ἰωσήφ, <Iōsēph>} whose {οὗ<hos>} father {τὸν πατέρα<ho patēr>} and {καὶ<kai>} mother {τὴν μητέρα;<ho mētēr>} we {ἡμεῖς<egō>} know? {οἴδαμεν<oida>} How {πῶς<pōs>} does → he → now {νῦν<nyn>} say, {λέγει<legō> ‘ὅτι<hoti>} I have come down {καταβέβηκα; <katabainō>} from {ἐκ<ek>} heaven’?” {τοῦ οὐρανοῦ<ho ouranos>}

6:43 - Jesus {Ἰησοῦς<Iēsous>} answered {Ἀπεκρίθη<apokrinomai>} • {καὶ<kai>} • {εἶπεν <legō>} them, {αὐτοῖς·<autos>} “Do → not {μὴ<mē>} grumble {γογγύζετε <gongyzō>} among {μετ᾽<meta>} yourselves. {ἀλλήλων.<allēlōn>}

6:44 - No one {οὐδεὶς<oudeis>} can {δύναται<dynamai>} come {ἐλθεῖν<erchomai>} to {πρὸς <pros>} me {ἐμέ,<egō>} unless {ἐὰν μὴ<ean mē>} the {ὁ<ho>} Father {πατὴρ <patēr>} who {ὁ<ho>} sent {πέμψας<pempō>} me {με<egō>} draws {ἑλκύσῃ <helkō>} him. {αὐτόν, <autos>} And I {κἀγὼ<kagō>} will raise {ἀναστήσω<anistēmi>} him {αὐτὸν<autos>} up ← on {ἐν<en>} the {τῇ<ho>} last {ἐσχάτῃ<eschatos>} day. {ἡμέρᾳ.<hēmera>}

6:45 - It → is {ἔστιν<eimi>} written {γεγραμμένον<graphō>} in {ἐν<en>} the {τοῖς <ho>} Prophets, {προφήταις·<prophētēs‘>} And {καὶ<kai>} they → will → all {πάντες <pas>} be {ἔσονται<eimi>} taught {διδακτοὶ<didaktos>} by → God.’ {θεοῦ.<theos>} Everyone {πᾶς<pas>} who {ὁ<ho>} has → heard {ἀκούσας<akouō>} and {καὶ<kai>} learned {μαθὼν<manthanō>} from {παρὰ<para>} the {τοῦ<ho>} Father {πατρὸς <patēr>} comes {ἔρχεται <erchomai>} to {πρὸς<pros>} me — {ἐμέ·<egō>}

6:46 - not {οὐχ<ou>} that {ὅτι<hoti>} anyone {τις<tis>} has → seen {ἑώρακέν <horaō>} the {τὸν<ho>} Father {πατέρα<patēr>} except {εἰ μὴ<ei mē>} he who {ὁ <ho>} is {ὢν<eimi>} from {παρὰ<para>} God; {τοῦ θεοῦ,<ho theos>} he {οὗτος <houtos>} has → seen {ἑώρακεν <horaō>} the {τὸν<ho>} Father. {πατέρα.<patēr>}

6:47 - Truly, {Ἀμὴν<amēn>} truly, {ἀμὴν<amēn>} I → say {λέγω<legō>} to → you, {ὑμῖν·<sy>} whoever {ὁ<ho>} believes {πιστεύων<pisteuō>} has {ἔχει<echō>} eternal {αἰώνιον. <aiōnios>} life. {ζωὴν<zōē>}

6:49 - Your {ὑμῶν<sy>} fathers {οἱ πατέρες<ho patēr>} ate {ἔφαγον<esthiō>} the {τὸ<ho>} manna {μάννα<manna>} in {ἐν<en>} the {τῇ <ho>} wilderness, {ἐρήμῳ <erēmos>} and {καὶ <kai>} they → died. {ἀπέθανον·<apothnēskō>}

6:50 - This {οὗτός<houtos>} is {ἐστιν<eimi>} the {ὁ<ho>} bread {ἄρτος<artos>} that {ὁ<ho>} comes down {καταβαίνων,<katabainō>} from {ἐκ<ek>} heaven, {τοῦ οὐρανοῦ <ho ouranos>} so that {ἵνα<hina>} one {τις<tis>} may → eat {φάγῃ<esthiō>} of {ἐξ<ek>} it {αὐτοῦ<autos>} and {καὶ<kai>} not {μὴ<mē>} die. {ἀποθάνῃ.<apothnēskō>}

6:51 - I {Ἐγώ<egō>} am {εἰμι<eimi>} the {ὁ<ho>} living {ὁ ζῶν<ho zaō>} bread {ἄρτος <artos>} that {ὁ<ho>} came down {καταβάς·<katabainō>] from {ἐκ<ek>} heaven. {τοῦ οὐρανοῦ<ho ouranos>} If {ἐάν<ean>} anyone {τις<tis>} eats {φάγῃ <esthiō>} of {ἐκ<ek>} this {τούτου<houtos>} bread, {τοῦ ἄρτου,<ho artos>} he → will → live {ζήσεται<zaō>} forever. {εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα.<eis ho aiōn>} And {καὶ<kai>} the {ὁ <ho>} bread {ἄρτος<artos>} • {δὲ<de>} that {ὃν<hos>} I {ἐγὼ egō>} will → give {δώσω <didōmi>} for {ὑπὲρ<hyper>} the {τῆς<ho>} life {ζωῆς.<zōē>} of → the {τοῦ <ho>} world {κόσμου<kosmos>} is {ἐστὶν<eimi>} my {μου<egō>} flesh.” {ἡ σάρξ<ho sarx>}

6:52 - The {οἱ<ho>} Jews {Ἰουδαῖοι <Ioudaios>} then {οὖν<oun>} disputed {Ἐμάχοντο <machomai>} among {πρὸς<pros>} themselves, {ἀλλήλους <allēlōn>} saying, {λέγοντες· <legō>} “How {πῶς<pōs>} can {δύναται<dynamai>} this {οὗτος <houtos>} man ← give {δοῦναι<didōmi>} us {ἡμῖν<egō>} his • flesh {τὴν σάρκα<ho sarx>} to → eat?” {φαγεῖν; <esthiō>}

6:53 - So {οὖν<oun>} Jesus {ὁ Ἰησοῦς·<ho Iēsous>} said {Εἶπεν<legō>} to → them, {αὐτοῖς <autos>} “Truly, {ἀμὴν amēn>} truly, {ἀμὴν<amēn>} I → say {λέγω<legō>} to → you, {ὑμῖν· <sy>} unless {ἐὰν μὴ<ean mē>} you → eat {φάγητε<esthiō>} the {τὴν <ho>} flesh {σάρκα<sarx>} of → the {τοῦ<ho>} Son {υἱοῦ<huios>} of → Man {τοῦ ἀνθρώπου<ho anthrōpos>} and {καὶ<kai>} drink {πίητε<pinō>} his {αὐτοῦ<autos>} blood, {τὸ αἷμα,<ho haima>} you → have {ἔχετε<echō>} no {οὐκ<ou>} life {ζωὴν <zōē>} in {ἐν<en>} you. {ἑαυτοῖς.<heautou>}

6:54 - Whoever {ὁ<ho>} feeds on {τρώγων<trōgō>} my {μου<egō>} flesh {τὴν σάρκα<hosarx>} and {καὶ<kai>} drinks {πίνων<pinō>} my {μου<egō>} blood {τὸ αἷμα <ho haima>} has {ἔχει<echō>} eternal {αἰώνιον,<aiōnios>} life, {ζωὴν<zōē>} and I {κἀγὼ <kagō>} will raise {ἀναστήσω<anistēmi>} him {αὐτὸν<autos>} up ← on → the {τῇ<ho>} last {ἐσχάτῃ<eschatos>} day. {ἡμέρᾳ.<hēmera>}

6:56 - Whoever {ὁ<ho>} feeds on {τρώγων<trōgō>} my {μου<egō>} flesh {τὴν σάρκα<hosarx>} and {καὶ<kai>} drinks {πίνων<pinō>} my {μου<egō>} blood {τὸ αἷμα<ho haima>} abides {μένει<menō>} in {ἐν<en>} me, {ἐμοὶ<egō>} and I {κἀγὼ<kagō>} in {ἐν <en>} him. {αὐτῷ.<autos>}

6:57 - As {καθὼς<kathōs>} the {ὁ<ho>} living {ζῶν<zaō>} Father {πατὴρ<patēr>} sent {ἀπέστειλέν<apostellō>} me, {με<egō>} and I {κἀγὼ<kagō>} live {ζῶ<zaō>} because of {διὰ<dia>} the {τὸν<ho>} Father, {πατέρα,<patēr>} so {καὶ<kai>} whoever {ὁ<ho>} feeds on {τρώγων<trōgō>} me, {με<egō>} he also {κἀκεῖνος <kakeinos>} will → live {ζήσει<zaō>} because of {δι᾽<dia>} me. {ἐμέ.<egō>}

John 6:22–59

Neither manna on the journey to the Promised Land in Moses’ time (Ex. 16:13–18) nor barley loaves in the Promised Land in Jesus’ time could satisfy the core hunger he came to satisfy. Too readily, we seek satisfaction from the bread of this world. When huge crowds followed him to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, Jesus seized the moment to expose their self-centered motivation and to reveal more of his God-glorifying vocation.

Jesus provides a bread that leads to eternal life. But Jesus doesn’t just provide this bread; he is this bread—the Bread of Life. This is the first of several “I am” statements by Jesus throughout John’s Gospel—each of which are reminiscent of the God who revealed his name to Moses as “I AM” (Ex. 3:14).

How can we acquire this life-giving bread? The only “work” that guarantees the possession of this redemptive manna is to believe in Jesus (John 6:29). The gospel sabotages any notion of legalism or performance-based acceptability with God. The only thing we bring to Jesus is our need. All we offer is the admission that we have nothing to offer.

Tragically, just as God’s people grumbled over the provision of the first manna, so now, as he offered the eschatological bread from heaven, some in the crowd did the same (Num. 11:1–15; John 6:43). Oh, the patience and forbearance of our God!
