6:60 - When many {πολλοὶ<polys>} • {οὖν<oun>} of {ἐκ<ek>} his {αὐτοῦ<autos>} disciples {τῶν μαθητῶν<ho mathētēs>} heard {ἀκούσαντες<akouō>} it, • theysaid, {εἶπον·<legō>} “This {οὗτος·<houtos>} is {ἐστιν<eimi>} ahard {σκληρός <sklēros>} saying; {ὁ λόγος<ho logos>} who {τίς<tis>} can {δύναται<dynamai>} listen {ἀκούειν; <akouō>} toit?” {αὐτοῦ<autos>}


6:61 - But {δὲ<de>} Jesus, {ὁ Ἰησοῦς<ho Iēsous>} knowing {Εἰδὼς<oida>} in {ἐν <en>} himself {ἑαυτῷ<heautou>} that {ὅτι<hoti>} his {αὐτοῦ<autos>} disciples {οἱ μαθηταὶ <ho mathētēs>} weregrumbling {γογγύζουσιν<gongyzō>} about {περὶ <peri>} this, {τούτου<houtos>} said {εἶπεν<legō>} tothem, {αὐτοῖς·<autos>} “Doyou {ὑμᾶς<sy>} takeoffense {σκανδαλίζει;<skandalizō>} atthis? {τοῦτο <houtos>}


6:62 - Then {οὖν<oun>} what if {ἐὰν<ean>} youweretosee {θεωρῆτε <theōreō>} the {τὸν<ho>} Son {υἱὸν<huios>} ofMan {τοῦ ἀνθρώπου<ho anthrōpos>} ascending {ἀναβαίνοντα<anabainō>} to where {ὅπου<hopou>} hewas {ἦν<eimi>} before? {τὸ πρότερον;<hoproteros>}


6:63 - Itis {ἐστὶν<eimi>} the {τὸ<ho>} Spirit {πνεῦμα<pneuma>} who {τὸ<ho>} gives life; {ζωοποιοῦν,<zōopoieō>} the {ἡ<ho>} flesh {σὰρξ<sarx>} isnohelp {ὠφελεῖ<ōpheleō>} at all. {οὐκ οὐδέν·<ou oudeis>} The {τὰ<ho>} words {ῥήματα <rhēma>} that {ἃ <hos>} I {ἐγὼ<egō>} havespoken {λελάληκα<laleō>} toyou {ὑμῖν<sy>} are {ἐστιν <eimi>} spirit {πνεῦμά<pneuma>} and {καὶ<kai>} life. {ζωή<zōē>} • {ἐστιν.<eimi>}

6:65 - And {καὶ<kai>} hesaid, {ἔλεγεν·<legō>} “This is why {διὰ τοῦτο <dia houtos>} Itold {εἴρηκα<legō>} you {ὑμῖν<sy>} that {ὅτι<hoti>} no one {οὐδεὶς<ou dei>} scan {δύναται <dynamai>} come {ἐλθεῖν<erchomai>} to {πρός<pros>} me {με<egōun>} less {ἐὰν μὴ<ean mē>} itis {ᾖ<eimi>} granted {δεδομένον<didōmi>} him {αὐτῷ<autos>} by {ἐκ<ek>} the {τοῦ<ho>} Father.” {πατρός.<patēr>}


6:66 - After {ἐκ<ek>} this {τούτου<houtos>} many {πολλοὶ<polys>} of {ἐκ<ek>} his {αὐτοῦ<autos>} disciples {τῶν μαθητῶν<ho mathētēs>} turned back {ἀπῆλθον εἰς τὰ ὀπίσω <aperchomai eis ho opisō>} and {καὶ<kai>} no longer {οὐκέτι<ouketi>} walked {περιεπάτουν.<peripateō>} with {μετ᾽<meta>} him. {αὐτοῦ<autos>}


6:67 - So {οὖν<oun>} Jesus {ὁ Ἰησοῦς<ho Iēsous>} said {Εἶπεν<legō>} tothe {τοῖς <ho>} twelve, {δώδεκα·<dōdeka>} “Doyou {ὑμεῖς<sy>} want {θέλετε<thelō>} to go away {ὑπάγειν;<hypagō>} as well {καὶ<kai>?”μὴ<mē>}


6:68 - Simon {Σίμων<Simōn>} Peter {Πέτρος·<Petros>} answered {ἀπεκρίθη <apokrinomai>} him, {αὐτῷ<autos>} “Lord, {κύριε,<kyrios>} to {πρὸς<pros>} whom {τίνα<tis>} shallwego? {ἀπελευσόμεθα;<aperchomai>} Youhave {ἔχεις,<echō>} thewords {ῥήματα <rhēma>} ofeternal {αἰωνίου<aiōnios>} life, {ζωῆς<zōē>}


6:69 - and {καὶ<kai>} we {ἡμεῖς<egō>} havebelieved, {πεπιστεύκαμεν<pisteuō>} and {καὶ<kai> havecometoknow, {ἐγνώκαμεν<ginōskō>} that {ὅτι<hoti>} you {σὺ<sy>} are {εἶ<eimi>} the {ὁ<ho>} Holy {ἅγιος<hagios>} OneofGod.” {τοῦ θεοῦ.<ho theos>}


6:70 - Jesus {ὁ Ἰησοῦς·<ho Iēsous>} answered {ἀπεκρίθη<apokrinomai>} them, {αὐτοῖς<autos>} “DidI {ἐγὼ<egō>} not {οὐκ<ou>} choose {ἐξελεξάμην,<eklegomai>} you, {ὑμᾶς<sy>} the {τοὺς<ho>} twelve? {δώδεκα<dōdeka>} And yet {καὶ<kai>} one {εἷς<heis>} of {ἐξ<ek>} you {ὑμῶν<sy>} is {ἐστιν;<eimi>} adevil.” {διάβολός<diabolos>}


6:71 - Hespoke {ἔλεγεν<legō> • δὲ<de>} ofJudas {τὸν Ἰούδαν<ho Ioudas>} thesonofSimon {Σίμωνος<Simōn>} Iscariot, {Ἰσκαριώτου·<Iskariōtēs>} for {γὰρ<gar>} he, {οὗτος<houtos>} one {εἷς<heis> • ὢν<eimi>} of {ἐκ<ek>} the {τῶν <ho>} twelve, {δώδεκα.<dōdeka>} wasgoing {ἔμελλεν<mellō>} tobetray {παραδιδόναι<paradidōmi>] him. {αὐτὸν<autos>}






 


That the crowds were offended by Jesus’ scandalous words is not surprising, and Jesus warned that there would be even greater grounds for offense in the coming days. Jesus didn’t come to win a popularity contest but to give his life as “a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45). The cross, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus are foolishness, even offensive to the natural mind (1 Cor. 1:18; Gal. 5:11). For the gospel reveals the depth of our need and our total inability to save ourselves. When we trust in our own cleverness or obedience or resources or abilities, we abhor God’s grace. But when God kindly deconstructs our vaunted self-sufficiency, our hearts come alive again. The Father generously grants many to believe on Jesus (John 6:39–40), and the Spirit gives life to all who call on his name.
