7:3 - So {οὖν<oun>} his {αὐτοῦ·<autos>} brothers {οἱ<ἀδελφοὶ<ho adelphos>} said {εἶπον<legō>} to {πρὸς<pros>} him, {αὐτὸν<autos>} “Leave {μετάβηθι<metabainō>} here {ἐντεῦθεν<enteuthen>} and {καὶ<kai>} go {ὕπαγε<hypagō>} to {εἰς<eis>} Judea, {τὴν Ἰουδαίαν<ho Ioudaia>} that {ἵνα<hina>} your {σου<sy>} disciples {οἱ μαθηταί <ho mathētēs>} also {καὶ<kai>} maysee {θεωρήσουσιν<theōreō>} • {σοῦ<sy>} the {τὰ <ho>} works {ἔργα<ergon>} • {ἃ<hos>} youaredoing. {ποιεῖς·<poieō>}


7:4 - For {γάρ<gar>} no one {οὐδεὶς<oudeis>} • {τι<tis>} works {ποιεῖ<poieō>} in {ἐν <en>} secret {κρυπτῷ<kryptos>} if {καὶ<kai>} he {αὐτὸς<autos>} seeks {ζητεῖ<zēteō>} tobe {εἶναι·<eimi>} known openly. {ἐν παρρησίᾳ<enparrēsia>} If {εἰ<ei>} youdo {ποιεῖς,<poieō>} these {ταῦτα<houtos>} things, ← show {φανέρωσον<phaneroō>} yourself {σεαυτὸν<seautou>} tothe {τῷ<ho> world.” {κόσμῳ.<kosmos>}


7:5 - For {γὰρ<gar>} not even {οὐδὲ<oude>} his {αὐτοῦ<autos>} brothers {οἱ ἀδελφοὶ<ho adelphos>} believed {ἐπίστευον<pisteuō>} in {εἰς<eis>} him. {αὐτόν.<autos>}

7:6 - • {οὖν<oun>} Jesus {ὁ Ἰησοῦς·<ho Iēsous>} said {Λέγει<legō>} tothem, {αὐτοῖς<autos>} “My {ὁ ἐμὸς<ho emos>} time {ὁ καιρὸς<ho kairos>} hasnot yet {οὔπω<oupō>} come, {πάρεστιν,<pareimi>} but {δὲ<de>} your {ὁ ὑμέτερος<ho hymeteros>} time {ὁ καιρὸς <ho kairos>} is {ἐστιν<eimi>} always {πάντοτέ<pantote>} here. {ἕτοιμος.<hetoimos>}


7:7 - The {ὁ<ho>} world {κόσμος<kosmos>} cannot {οὐ δύναται<oudynamai>} hate {μισεῖν<miseō>} you, {ὑμᾶς,<sy>} but {δὲ<de>} ithates {μισεῖ,<miseō>} me {ἐμὲ <egō>} because {ὅτι<hoti>} I {ἐγὼ<egō>} testify {μαρτυρῶ<martyreō>} about {περὶ <peri>} it {αὐτοῦ<autos>} that {ὅτι<hoti>} its {αὐτοῦ<autos>} works {τὰ ἔργα<ho ergon>} are {ἐστιν.<eimi>} evil. {πονηρά<ponēros>}


7:8 - You {ὑμεῖς<sy>} go up {ἀνάβητε<anabainō>} to {εἰς<eis>} the {τὴν<ho>} feast. {ἑορτήν·<heortē>} I {ἐγὼ<egō>} amnot {οὐκ<ou>} going up {ἀναβαίνω <anabainō>} to {εἰς<eis>} this {ταύτην,<houtos>} feast, {τὴν ἑορτὴν<ho heortē>} for {ὅτι<hoti>} my {ἐμὸς<emos>} time {ὁ καιρὸς<ho kairos>} hasnot yet {οὔπω <oupō>} fully {πεπλήρωται. <plēroō>} come.”


7:9 - Aftersaying {εἰπὼν<legō>} this, {ταῦτα<houtos>} he {αὐτὸς<autos>} remained {ἔμεινεν<menō>} in {ἐν<en>} Galilee. {τῇ Γαλιλαίᾳ.<ho Galilaia>}


7:10 - But {δὲ<de>] after {Ὡς<hōs>} his {αὐτοῦ<autos>} brothers {οἱ ἀδελφοὶ<ho adelphos>} had gone up {ἀνέβησαν<anabainō>} to {εἰς<eis>} the {τὴν<ho>} feast, {ἑορτήν,<heortē>} then {τότε<tote>} he {αὐτὸς<autos>} also {καὶ<kai>} went up, {ἀνέβη<anabainō>} not {οὐ<ou>} publicly {φανερῶς<phanerōs>} but {ἀλλὰ<alla>} • {ὡς<hōs>} in {ἐν<en>} private. {κρυπτῷ.<kryptos>}


7:11 - The {οἱ<ho>} • {οὖν<oun>} Jews {Ἰουδαῖοι<Ioudaios>} were looking for {ἐζήτουν <zēteō>} him {αὐτὸν<autos>} at {ἐν<en> the {τῇ<ho>} feast, {ἑορτῇ<heortē>} and {καὶ<kai>} saying, {ἔλεγον·<legō>} “Where {ποῦ<pou>} is {ἐστιν<eimi>} he?” {ἐκεῖνος; <ekeinos>}


7:12 - And {καὶ<kai>} therewas {ἦν<eimi> much {πολὺς<polys>} muttering {γογγυσμὸς<gongysmos>} about {περὶ<peri>} him {αὐτοῦ<autos>} among {ἐν<en>} the {τοῖς <ho>} people. {ὄχλοις.<ochlos>} While {μὲν<men>} some {οἱ<ho>} said, {ἔλεγον<legō>} “ {ὅτι <hoti>} Heis {ἐστιν,<eimi>} agood {ἀγαθός<agathos>} man,” ← others {ἄλλοι<allos>} • {δὲ<de>} said, {ἔλεγον·<legō>} “No, {οὔ,<ou>} heisleading → • {ἀλλὰ<alla>} the {τὸν<ho>} people {ὄχλον.<ochlos>} astray.” {πλανᾷ<planaō>}


7:13 - Yet {μέντοι<mentoi>} for {διὰ<dia>} fear {τὸν φόβον<ho phobos>} ofthe {τῶν<ho>} Jews {Ἰουδαίων.<Ioudaios>} no one {οὐδεὶς<oudeis>} spoke {ἐλάλει <laleō>} openly {παρρησίᾳ<parrēsia>} of {περὶ<peri>} him. {αὐτοῦ<autos>}


7:14 - • {Ἤδη<ēdē>} • {δὲ<de>} Aboutthemiddle {μεσούσης<mesoō>} ofthe {τῆς <ho>} feast {ἑορτῆς<heortē>} Jesus {Ἰησοῦς<Iēsous>} went up {ἀνέβη <anabainō>} into {εἰς<eis>} the {τὸ<ho>} temple {ἱερὸν<hieron>} and {καὶ<kai>} beganteaching. {ἐδίδασκεν. <didaskō>}

7:15 - The {οἱ<ho> Jews {Ἰουδαῖοι<Ioudaios>} therefore {οὖν<oun>} marveled, {ἐθαύμαζον<thaumazō>} saying, {λέγοντες·>legō>} “How {πῶς<pōs>} isitthatthis {οὗτος<houtos>} manhaslearning, <γράμματα οἶδεν <grammaoida>} whenhehasnever {μὴ <mē>} studied?” {μεμαθηκώς; >manthanō>}


7:16 - So {οὖν<oun>} Jesus {ὁ Ἰησοῦς<ho Iēsous>} answered {Ἀπεκρίθη <apokrinomai>} them, {αὐτοῖς<autos>} • {καὶ<kai> • {εἶπεν·<legō>} “My {ἐμὴ<emos>} teaching {ἡ διδαχὴ<ho didachē>} is {ἔστιν<eimi>} not {οὐκ<ou>} mine, {ἐμὴ<emos>} but {ἀλλὰ <alla>} his who {τοῦ<ho>} sent {πέμψαντός<pempō>} me. {με·<egō>}


7:17 - If {ἐάν<ean>} anyone’s {τις<tis>} will {θέλῃ<thelō>} istodo {ποιεῖν, <poieō>} God’swill, {τὸ θέλημα<ho thelēma>} • {αὐτοῦ<autos>} hewillknow {γνώσεται<ginōskō>} • {περὶ<peri>} whether {πότερον<poteron>} the {τῆς<ho>} teaching {διδαχῆς<didachē>} is {ἐστιν<eimi>} from {ἐκ<ek>} God {τοῦ θεοῦ<ho theos>} or {ἢ <ē>} whether • I {ἐγὼ<egō>} amspeaking {λαλῶ.<laleō>} onmy {ἐμαυτοῦ <emautou>} ownauthority. {ἀπ᾽<apo>}


7:18 - The one who {ὁ<ho>} speaks {λαλῶν<laleō>} onhis {ἑαυτοῦ<heautou>} ownauthority {ἀφ᾽<apo>} seeks {ζητεῖ·<zēteō>} hisown {τὴν ἰδίαν<ho idios>} glory; {τὴν δόξαν<ho doxa>} but {δὲ<de>} the one who {ὁ<ho>} seeks {ζητῶν <zēteō>} the {τὴν <ho>} glory {δόξαν<doxa>} of him who {τοῦ<ho>} sent {πέμψαντος <pempō>} him {αὐτόν,<autos>} • {οὗτος<houtos>} is {ἐστιν,<eimi>} true, {ἀληθής<alēthēs>} and {κα<kai>} in {ἐν <en>} him {αὐτῷ<autos>} thereis {ἔστιν.<eimi>} no {οὐκ<ou>} falsehood. {ἀδικία <adikia>}


7:19 - Hasnot {οὐ<ou>} Moses {Μωϋσῆς<Mōusēs>} given {δέδωκεν<didōmi>} you {ὑμῖν<sy>} the {τὸν<ho>} law? {νόμον;<nomos>} Yet {καὶ<kai>} none {οὐδεὶς <oudeis>} of {ἐξ<ek>} you {ὑμῶν<sy>} keep {sποιεῖ<poieō>} the {τὸν<ho>} law. {νόμον·<nomos>} Why {τί<tis>} doyouseek {ζητεῖτε<zēteō>} tokill {ἀποκτεῖναι;<apokteinō>} me?” {με <egō>}


7:20 - The {ὁ<ho> crowd {ὄχλος·<ochlos>} answered, {ἀπεκρίθη<apokrinomai>} “You have {ἔχεις·<echō>} ademon! {δαιμόνιον<daimonion>} Who {τίς<tis>} isseeking {ζητεῖ<zēteō>} tokill {ἀποκτεῖναι;<apokteinō>} you?” {σε<sy>}


7:21 - Jesus {Ἰησοῦς<Iēsous>} answered {Ἀπεκρίθη<apokrinomai>} • {καὶ<kai>} • {εἶπεν<legō>} them, {αὐτοῖς·<autos>} “Idid {ἐποίησα,>poieō>} one {ἓν<heis>} work, {ἔργον<ergon>} and {καὶ<kai>} youall {πάντες<pas>} marvel {θαυμάζετε.<thaumazō>} atit.


7:22 - • {διὰ<dia>} • {τοῦτο<houtos>} Moses {Μωϋσῆς<Mōusēs>} gave {δέδωκεν <didōmi>} you {ὑμῖν<sy>} circumcision {τὴν περιτομήν,<hoperitomē>} (not {οὐχ<ou>} that {ὅτι<hoti>} itis {ἐστὶν<eimi>} from {ἐκ<ek>} Moses, {τοῦ Μωϋσέως<ho Mōusēs>} but {ἀλλ᾽<alla>} from {ἐκ<ek>} the {τῶν<ho>} fathers), {πατέρων,<patēr>} and {καὶ<kai>} youcircumcise {περιτέμνετε<peritemnō>} aman {ἄνθρωπον.<anthrōpos>} on {ἐν<en> theSabbath. {σαββάτῳ<sabbaton>}

7:24 - Donot {μὴ<mē>} judge {κρίνετε<krinō>} by {κατ᾽<kata>} appearances, {ὄψιν,<opsis>} but {ἀλλὰ<alla>} judge {κρίνετε.<krinō>} withright {δικαίαν <dikaios>} judgment.” {τὴν<κρίσιν<ho krisis>}





 


In John 7–8, Jesus’ Christological claims grow even more dramatic, and the response of the Jews grows increasingly hostile. Nothing is as disruptive as grace. The Jews wanted to put Jesus to death. Indeed, they did put him to death, but only at the appointed time (see 7:6) and only for God’s saving purposes (Acts 2:23–24). God’s sovereignty never sleeps. Even the most disastrous and inexplicable of events are under his wise, governing hand.

Even members of Jesus’ own family struggled with their half brother’s identity—coming to faith only after his resurrection (Mark 3:21; Acts 1:14; 1 Cor. 15:7). None of us can presume upon our relationship to Jesus. It comes by grace alone through faith alone. We too, like Nicodemus, must be born from above so that we might believe from within.



In dramatic fashion, Jesus moved into the temple courts and began to teach. His words generated astonishment and rage: astonishment because of the depth of knowledge he possessed as a seemingly untrained rabbi; rage because his teaching exposed the people’s sin. At the same time his teaching further distinguished him, his earthly authority, and his heavenly status.

The gospel of grace that comes to us because of who Jesus is and what Jesus has done in our place does not land on people in a neutral way. It is either received with joy or rejected with contempt. The gospel is the aroma of life to some and the aroma of death to others (2 Cor. 2:15–16). There is no middle ground.
