21 - So {οὖν<oun>} hesaid {Εἶπεν<legō>} tothem {αὐτοῖς·<autos>} again, {πάλιν <palin>} “I {ἐγὼ<egō>} am going away, {ὑπάγω,<hypagō>} and {καὶ<kai>} youwillseek {ζητήσετέ<zēteō>} me, {με<egō>} and {καὶ<kai>} youwilldie {ἀποθανεῖσθε·<apothnēskō>} in {ἐν<en>} your {ὑμῶν<sy>} sin. {τῇ<ἁμαρτίᾳ<ho hamartia>} Where {ὅπου<hopou>} I {ἐγὼ<egō>} amgoing, {ὑπάγω<hypagō>} you {ὑμεῖς<sy>} cannot {οὐ δύνασθε<ou dynamai>} come.” {ἐλθεῖν.<erchomai>}


22 - So {οὖν<oun>} the {οἱ<ho>} Jews {Ἰουδαῖοι·<Ioudaios>} said, {ἔλεγον<legō>} “Willhekill {ἀποκτενεῖ<apokteinō>} himself, {ἑαυτόν,<heautou.] since {ὅτι <hoti>} hesays, {λέγει·<legō>} ‘Where {ὅπου<hopou>} I {ἐγὼ<egō>} amgoing, {ὑπάγω<hypagō>} you {ὑμεῖς<sy>} cannot {οὐ δύνασθε<oudynamai>} come {’ἐλθεῖν;<erchomai>} ?” {μήτι<mēti>}


23 - • {καὶ<kai>} Hesaid {ἔλεγεν<legō>} tothem, {αὐτοῖς·<autos>} “You {ὑμεῖς <sy>} are {ἐστέ,<eimi>} from {ἐκ<ek>} below; {τῶν κάτω<ho katō>} I {ἐγὼ<egō>} am {εἰμί·<eimi>} from {ἐκ<ek>} above. {τῶν ἄνω<ho anō>} You {ὑμεῖς<sy>} are {ἐστέ,<eimi>} of {ἐκ<ek>} this {τούτου<houtos>} world; {τοῦ κόσμου<ho kosmos>} I {ἐγὼ <egō>} am {εἰμὶ<eimi>} not {οὐκ<ou>} of {ἐκ<ek>} this {τούτου.<houtos>} world. {τοῦ κόσμου<ho kosmos>}


24 - Itold {εἶπον<legō>} • {οὖν<oun>} you {ὑμῖν<sy>} that {ὅτι<hoti>} youwoulddie {ἀποθανεῖσθε<apothnēskō>} in {ἐν<en>} your {ὑμῶν·<sy>} sins, {ταῖς ἁμαρτίαις<ho hamartia>} for {γὰρ<gar>} unless {ἐὰν μὴ<ean mē>} youbelieve {πιστεύσητε<pisteuō>} that {ὅτι<hoti>} I {ἐγώ<egō>} am {εἰμι,<eimi>} heyouwilldie {ἀποθανεῖσθε<apothnēskō>} in {ἐν<en>} your {ὑμῶν.<sy>} sins.” {ταῖς ἁμαρτίαις<ho hamartia>


25 - So {οὖν<oun>} theysaid {ἔλεγον<legō>} tohim, {αὐτῷ·<autos>} “Who {τίς<tis>} are {εἶ;<eimi>} you?” {σὺ<sy>} Jesus {ὁ Ἰησοῦς·<ho Iēsous>} said {εἶπεν <legō>} tothem, {αὐτοῖς<autos>} “Just {καὶ<kai>} what {ὅ τι<hos tis>} Ihavebeentelling {λαλῶ<laleō>} you {ὑμῖν.<sy>} fromthe {τὴν<ho>} beginning. {ἀρχὴν<archē>}


26 - Ihave {ἔχω<echō>} much {πολλὰ<polys>} tosay {λαλεῖν<laleō>} about {περὶ<peri>} you {ὑμῶν<sy>} and {καὶ<kai>} muchtojudge, {κρίνειν·<krinō>} but {ἀλλ᾽<alla>} he who {ὁ<ho>} sent {πέμψας<pempō>} me {με<egō>} is {ἐστιν,<eimi>} true, {ἀληθής<alēthēs>} and I {κἀγὼ<kagō>} • {ταῦτα<houtos>} declare {λαλῶ<laleō>} to {εἰς<eis>} the {τὸν<ho>} world {κόσμον.<kosmos>} what {ἃ<hos>} Ihaveheard {ἤκουσα<akouō>} from {παρ᾽<para>} him.” {αὐτοῦ,<autos>}


27 - Theydidnot {οὐκ<ou>} understand {ἔγνωσαν>ginōskō>} that {ὅτι <hoti>} hehadbeenspeaking {ἔλεγεν.<legō>} tothem {αὐτοῖς <autos>} aboutthe {τὸν<ho>} Father. {πατέρα<patēr>}


28 - So {οὖν<oun>} Jesus {ὁ Ἰησοῦς·<ho Iēsous>} said {εἶπεν<legō>} tothem, {αὐτοῖς<autos>} “When {ὅταν<hotan>} youhavelifted {ὑψώσητε<hypsoō>} upthe {τὸν<ho>} Son {υἱὸν<huios>} ofMan, {τοῦ ἀνθρώπου,<ho anthrōpos>} then {τότε<tote>} youwill know {γνώσεσθε<ginōskō>} that {ὅτι<hoti>} I {ἐγώ <egō>} am {εἰμι,<eimi>} he, • and {καὶ<kai>} thatIdo {ποιῶ<poieō>} nothing {οὐδέν,<oudeis>} onmy {ἐμαυτοῦ<emautou>} ownauthority, {ἀπ᾽<apo>} but {ἀλλὰ<alla> speak {λαλῶ.<laleō>} just as {καθὼς<kathōs>} the {ὁ ho>} Father {πατήρ,<patēr>} taught {ἐδίδαξέν<didaskō>} me. {με <egō>} • {ταῦτα<houtos>}


29 - And {καὶ<kai>} he who {ὁ<ho>} sent {πέμψας<pempō>} me {με<egō>} is {ἐστιν· <eimi>} with {μετ᾽<meta>} me. {ἐμοῦ<egō>} Hehasnot {οὐκ<ou>} left {ἀφῆκέν <aphiēmi>} me {με<egō>} alone, {μόνον,<monos>} for {ὅτι<hoti>} I {ἐγὼ <egō>} always {πάντοτε.<pantote>} do {ποιῶ<poieō>} the things that {τὰ<ho>} arepleasing {ἀρεστὰ<arestos>} tohim.” {αὐτῷ<autos>}


30 - Ashe {αὐτοῦ<autos>} wassaying {λαλοῦντος<laleō>} these {ταῦτα <houtos>} things, ← many {πολλοὶ<polys>} believed {ἐπίστευσαν<pisteuō>} in {εἰς<eis>} him. {αὐτόν. <autos>}





 

The hostile reaction of the Pharisees to Jesus’ words is understandable, but rather than backing down, Jesus intensifies his claims. The accused now becomes the accuser—the witness takes the role of prosecuting attorney. Jesus is from above, they are from below; they are of this world, Jesus is not of this world. They charged Jesus with sin; they will remain in their sins unless they believe on him.

The gospel is an unrelenting assault on graceless religion, on all the ways we try to avoid grace. It is also a powerful demonstration of the sovereignty of God. In that very unlikely moment, many believed in Jesus. God can save anyone, anytime, anywhere. He is not constrained by human intuitions about who is really “save-able.” Grace confounds our law-saturated, self-accomplishing expectations of what activates divine mercy.
